A Christmas Carol (another point of view)[/u]

As our story opens, our main character, a Mr. Ebeneezer Scrooge who is a self made but frugal businessman being accosted by a pair of liberals. When they attempt to force some sort of charitable donation out of him, for relief of the 'poor', he points out correctly that his taxes already provide options for the poor if they choose to make use of them. They then attempt to point out that most of the 'poor' feel that such places are 'beneath their dignity', so he throws them out of his office.

In the next scene his employee a Mr. Bob Crachit attempts to both get a holiday off (one that was obviously NOT agreed upon as a day off when he was first employed.) and a raise. Mr.Scrooge denies the raise on the basis of Mr. Crachit's habitual lateness but being a somewhat kindhearted man, he allows his employee the requested day off. Being a businessman, he also points out correctly that if Mr. Crachit is unhappy with his current job, he is free to seek employment elsewhere.

When we reach the next main scene, Mr. Scrooge is attempting to sleep when his home is broken into and he is accosted by three ultra liberal ghosts. The three ghosts then through a combination of guilt, sleep deprivation and threats of death attempt to brainwash Mr. Scrooge into some sort of socialist wealth redistribution program. They show him scenes of the poor who don't wish to utilize the government sponsored relief organizations. They try to encourage him to provide a family medical plan for his employee, even though no such plan was part of his employment contract. They point out the lack of food on the Crachit family table, not mentioning the fact that it was the Crachit's fault for having more children than he was able to support. They threaten him with death if he fails to comply with their view of how things should be.

When he wakes after almost no sleep he has been thoroughly indoctrinated (ala A Clockwork Orange) in the ultra liberal worldview. He then precedes to give away his money at a furious rate. He provides free food for his employees, gives money to help the 'poor' who won't help themselves, and doubles his employees salary (causing disruption for other business owners with the skewing of the pay scale for that particular job field). He provides a free family medical policy out of his own pocket.

The part of the story the ultra libs don't want you to hear is the aftermath of all this spending. Within a few years, due to vast unnecessary spending, his business was unable to compete in a free market economy and went out of business. That caused Bob Crachit to have no job and no benefits whatsoever. The government was denied the taxes that Mr. Scrooge's business provided and thus there was less money to help the truly needy. Mr. Scrooge was in the end, destitute, He spent the last days of his life being cared for by his nephew, proof positive that charity begins at home.

As one of the Crachit youngsters was fond of saying:

God Bless us, everyone.

(at least til the ultra libs make us remove God from Christmas.)

Merry Christmas, Fedral.

I hope humanity is further along the evolutionary scale than you apparently think it is.

Merry Christmas Frank,

I thought that you of all people would recognize a bit of Holiday satire when you saw it. I wrote this to poke fun, not to start a flame war. Very Happy

Ain't gonna be no flame war.

I recognize satire when I see it.

I happen to be a guy who often uses humor to make a point -- and perhaps (rightly or wrongly) I read that same motivation into others.

I've truly enjoyed our give and take these last few months, Fedral -- and look forward to lots more of it in 2004.

LOL this is loosely based on a longer essay that I wrote during college, many, many years ago. (The original was on my old hard drive and too much of a pain to get off)

The only reason I wrote it was to irritate my English professor (a SCREAMING ultra liberal) and it accomplished my point. He failed me Laughing

Thanks for that laugh, Fedral.

I've done the "cut off my nose to spite my face thing a few times myself -- but for me, it is often in the opposite direction.

Jeez, you would never believe how many white, male bosses can be hard-nosed right-wingers with a limited sense of humor when it comes to ball-busting from an agnostic iconoclast with a sardonic and jaded view of American conservatism.

But my actions often resulted in more time for me to spend on the golf course!!!
