(CBS/AP) The son of former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore has been charged with marijuana possession.

Albert A. Gore III, 21, was arrested Friday night after he was stopped for driving a vehicle without its headlights on.

Two passengers were also arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. They were identified as Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass.

A Montgomery County, Md., police officer stopped the car, a dark-colored Cadillac, in Bethesda, a Washington suburb, around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The officer noticed the car's windows and sunroof were open, despite cold temperatures Friday night. There was also a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to a news release from the police department.

A search of the vehicle turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box containing suspected marijuana, and a soft drink can that also smelled of marijuana.

All three were released pending trial.

In September 2002, the younger Gore was ticketed for driving under the influence. He was pulled over and ticketed by military police just outside Fort Myer in suburban Virginia, but was not taken into custody.

In the summer of 2000, Gore was cited by the North Carolina Highway Patrol for driving 97 mph in a 55-mph zone. Under an agreement with prosecutors, a reckless driving charge was dropped in the North Carolina case, but he was fined $125 for speeding and his driving privileges in the state were suspended.

If it makes your holiday more heart-warming, McGentrix, enjoy. I guess the only thing that would top it would be for Chelsea Clinton to get busted.

Something you can dream about tonight...

I was talking about ascribing intent based on negative preconception.

I am still amazed that it took 3 posts to get back to Bush's daughters. You know, instead of dealing with such obvious targets as drug legalization and prominent politicians lack of responsibility with their children.

Pretty amazing statement from someone who belongs to the "oh yeah, well Clinton got a blow job" school of thought to excuse anything a Bush Inc. affiliate might ever do.....

This is beyond stupid. American drug laws are riduculous. This kid will have a record for the rest of his life for a hoot. It's not worth it.
The states allows any idiot to carry a gun but pot is still a criminal offence. Bizarre.

I've probably been as vocal as anyone else in my scorn for the so-called drug war -- and for laws against marijuana.

BUT...

...if this guy was driving while doing a bone, he deserves a ticket -- and the penalty should be considerable. At minimum, a stiff fine -- and I would not think a short revocation of his driver's license would be inappropriate.

Thinking drugs laws are stupid is one thing. Thinking it is okay to drive while impaired is another thing completely.

point taken Frank...well taken by this bear....I believe ALL drugs should be legal, but I don't think one should go out driving once one is loaded....big waste of your buzz for one thing....

Hey Frank, I agree with the driving thing, but they never did a blood test/urine test so they based the arrest on possession. You can have a a drink and drive (below .08) - where is the same leniency for pot. One toke is not excessive or is it? How do we know he was impaired? It's not like there have been studies in the US done on the effects of drugs and driving. How much is too much, how much did the kid smoke? Unknown... 'cause the cop based his arrest on smell.
And generally pot heads don't speed at the very least.

Come on up, Bi. But one word of warning, a Polar Bears could freeze his ass off in this northern weather if he's not accustomed.
