We enjoy each other's company again. I think I had shut down, and so had he; it took one of us to decide to get back what we had, for both of us to go in that direction.

What does the phrase "shut down" mean here?

To become unemotional, unfeeling or to just stop caring. To go about life like a robot. People in a relationship sometimes stop seeing one another like they once did, they stop talking about the big things and sometimes they need a spark or to fight for what they once shared. To learn to love each other again instead of going through the motions... hope this helps. I'm sure everyone can read a different meaning or inference from this passage. This is my torture explanation.

K, I got to go to bed. Have a great day.
