Rap:

Add and subtract both relations and you get
X+Y=5 and X-Y=1
Then it becomes apparent that X=3 and Y=2 Cool

Add the equation to give: 10000X + 10000Y = 50000
Divide by 10000 to give: X + Y = 5
Subtract to give: 3502X - 3502Y = 3502
Divide by 3502 to give: X - Y = 1
Therefore: X = 3 and Y = 2

TTH:

Ya, what rap said

Hellooooooooooo! Who turned the lights out!

Five A2K'ers entered a contest to guess how many balls were in a bowl.
Rap guessed 45, Jove guessed 39, Mark guessed 49, Mismi guessed 50, and TTH guessed 47.

One was off by 6, one by 5, one by 2, and one by 4.

One was right; who was it Question

The lady is totally correct; you can't shorten the process of egg-hatching by increasing the number of chickens. Laughing

Hey buddy, I didn't know you were a mathamagician! Laughing

I don't see any way of doing this aside from working through it. We know that the number is at most 6 away from other numbers. This immediately rules out 39, 49, and 50 which are 10 and 11 away from each other.
It also rules out 47 that is 8 away from 39. That leaves 45. 45 is 6 away from 39, 5 away from 50, 4 away from 49, and 2 away from 47. So there are 45 balls in the bowl and Rap guessed correctly.

You could have answered it by noticing that all of the guesses were odd but one (50), and that all of the degrees by which they were wrong were even but one (off by 5). To get an even number from an odd number, you have to subtract or add another odd number, and there's only one odd number available. So just look for an answer that was five less than 50, given that 50 was on the higher end of things.

At first glance it seems that you could just add 21 + 7/2=14....but I don't think so. How about 21(1 hour) + 21(7 x 3hours)=42/4=10.5 cm per hour?

let d be the distance in cm to the vegtable patch

then 21*t1=d & 7*t2=d
add them together
2d=21*t1+7*t2=3*7*t1+7*t2
if t0=t1+t2
then
2d=7*(2*t1+t0)
average speed then is Va & Va*t0=2d
so
Va*t0=7*(2*t1+t0)
(Va-7)*t0=14*t1=2/3*2d
Va*t0-7*t0=2/3*2d
2d-7*t0=2/3*t0
6d-21*t0=2*t0
solve for t0
t0=4d/21 hr
since Va*t0=Va*4d/21=2d
solve for Va
Va=2d*(21/4d)=21/2=10.5 cm/hr

How about that indeed! Razz

Speed is distance over time. If he travels 21cm to the vegetable patch then it will take him 1 hour to get there (at 21cm/hour) and 3 hours to get back (at 7cm/hour). He/She will have traveled 42cm (21 x 2) over 4 (1 + 3) hours so his average speed is 10.5cm/hour.

You and Rap pass by a standard coin operated (US) vending machine and you decide to get a candy bar. The price is US $0.95 but after checking your pockets you only have a dollar (US $1) and the machine only takes coins.

You turn to Rap and have this conversation.

You: Hey, do you have change for a dollar?

Rap: Let's see... I have 6 US coins but, although they add up to US$1.15, I can't break a dollar.

You: Huh? Can you make change for half a dollar?

Rap: No.

You: How about a quarter?

Rap: Nope. And before you ask I can't make change for a dime or nickel either.

You: Really? And these 6 coins are all US government coins currently in production?

Rap: Yes.

You: Well can you just put your coins into the vending machine and buy me the candy bar, and I'll pay you back?

Rap: Sorry, I'd like to but I can't with the coins I have.

What six coins does Rap have Question

They all add up to US$1.15 and he doesn't have change for a dollar, US$0.50, US$0.25, US$0.10, or US$0.05.

Also, and here's a trick; he can't buy the candy bar for US$0.95 because a typical US vending machine doesn't take 50 cent coins -- only quarters and below.

TTH enquired about the whereabouts of Thoh. May I suggest you try:

It moves forward, and typically hits me in the back of the head much to the amusement of my children.
