Howdy doody partners…don't ask; it's been a nightmare fighting the dark forces!

Q. 1.
Why is 10 to the power 0 equal to 1 ?

Reason 1
104 = 1 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10
103 = 1 x 10 x 10 x 10
102 = 1 x 10 x 10
101 = 1 x 10
100 = 1

Reason 2
102 ÷ 102 = 102 - 2 = 100 = 1

Q.2 . By TTH
Why don't you make that question a little harder? Why is any number to the power of 0 = to 1?

Reason 3
code for calculating 10^n:
input n
x = 1
for i=1 to n
x = 10 * x
next i
print x

Miss Mi beautifully writes, "Doesn't she papaw?"

Now when you pick a pawpaw
Or a prickly pear
And you prick a raw paw
Next time beware
Don't pick the prickly pear by the paw
When you pick a pear
Try to use the claw
But you don't need to use the claw
When you pick a pear of the big pawpaw
Have I given you a clue ?

The bare necessities of life will come to you
They'll come to you!

So just try and relax, yeah cool it
Fall apart in my backyard
'Cause let me tell you something little britches
If you act like that bee acts, uh uh
You're working too hard

And don't spend your time lookin' around
For something you want that can't be found
When you find out you can live without it
And go along not thinkin' about it
I'll tell you something true

The bare necessities of life will come to you…

Jove; It's good to read you are continuing with your drawing; few people paint the scriptures nowadays.

Each day the Professor meets his wife Mismi at the train station after work, and then she drives him home. Cute!

She always arrives exactly on time to pick him up. Nice!

One day he catches an earlier train and arrives at the station an hour early. He immediately begins walking home along the same route the wife drives. Pity its raining!

Eventually his wife sees him on her way to the station and drives him the rest of the way home. When they arrive home the Professor notices that they arrived 20 minutes earlier than usual. Smart!

How much time did the Professor spend walking Question

Papaw is a fruit? Well I'll be - I've never seen it spelled that way but you are right TTH...

But...Down here in the South we call grandaddy's (old men) Papaw. So there's my term of endearment for Try. You doddering old codger you...

I haven't the slightest idea how long The Professor had been walking. Bless his heart! :wink:

Making alot of assumptions on this one!!! She spent 20 minutes less in driving time, 10 minutes each way, which means he walked 50 minutes?

I can picture it, but I can't explain it Sad

I thought about this walking thing and here is my explanation.

Say mismi normally meets the professor at 1:00. He arrived an hour early, meaning 12:00, and started to walk. He sees her at 12:50 (that accounts for 10 minutes early arrival and 10 minutes early back home for a total of 20 minutes). Since he started to walk at 12:00 and they came across one another at 12:50 that means he walked 50 minutes. Is that a Very Happy or a Sad ? Laughing

If only Mismi had known about the earlier train then they would have been home together 60 minutes earlier instead of 20 minutes, goodness knows what the Professor did in those 40 minutes but TTH lives within walking distance.

Mismi and the Professor:

TTH: "She spent 20 minutes less in driving time, 10 minutes each way, which means he walked 50 minutes?

Now, I thought the answer was 50 minutes; but 20 + 10 + 10?

TTH II: "Say mismi normally meets the professor at 1:00. He arrived an hour early, meaning 12:00, and started to walk. He sees her at 12:50 (that accounts for 10 minutes early arrival and 10 minutes early back home for a total of 20 minutes). YES! You have it, and it is difficult to explain…

It will help if you draw a graph...

Suppose another couple (call them couple B) lives with the couple stated in the problem (call them couple A). Normally both men catch the same train home. However today the husband B arrives at the station 20 minutes early and wife B is already there to take him home. Both men will arrive home at the same time, because both arrive 20 minutes earlier than usual.

On their way home at some point couple B will pass wife A picking up husband A and they will drive the rest of the way home side by side, again both arriving 20 minutes early.

Now assume that wife A didn't see her husband and instead kept going to the train station. She would have arrived exactly 20 minutes after wife B left, because husband B arrived 20 minutes before husband A was expected to arrive, and wife A is always exactly on time. Likewise if wife B had turned around when she saw husband A and went back to the station she would have arrived 20 minutes after she left the station.

In other words it would take her 10 minutes to reach husband A and 10 minutes to get back to the station.

So after A walked for 40 minutes wife B would have left the station. 10 minutes later she would have caught up to husband A. So husband A walked a total of 50 minutes.

This problem comes from Games for the Super-Intelligent by James F. Fixx, which is out of print. - Congrats to S-I TTH.

Slippy writes, " … goodness knows what the Professor did in those 40 minutes but TTH lives within walking distance." Shocked

Oh my! Is that how TTH knew all about the times!!! Who would have thought it? :wink:
