Really?

P(at least one number is divisibly by 2) = 7/8
P(at least one number is divisible by 5) = 61/125
P(answer is divisible by 10) = 7/8 * 61/125 = 0.427

Since we're voting, I like probability/counting problems.

QUESTION:

A E I O U Y

Why is O the odd one out?

Odd One Out

Listen to our little song
It doesn't matter if you don't belong
So don't worry if you have to shout
Looks like I'm the odd one out
Everyday whatever you play
Someone's not going to fit
So if it's you then don't feel blue
It doesn't matter one little bit
No it doesn't

Listen to our little song
It doesn't matter if you don't belong
So don't worry if you have to shout
Looks like I'm the odd one out
It really isn't all that bad
Don't let it make you feel mad
So when it's you just laugh and say
I'm gonna find something else to play

Listen to our little song
It doesn't matter if you don't belong
We want you to sing and shout
I like being the odd one out
I like being the odd one out

Most people are sceptical when I tell them I can calculate any six digit number they choose! If I fail; you get 10 bucks; if you loose; I get one dollar.

So this is the deal…..

Write down any three-digit number (genuinely three digits, ie, not beginning with 0), then write it down again, so as to give a 6-digit number, for example 123123.

Divide the six-digit number by 7.
Next, divide the answer by 11.
Next, divide that answer by 13 (Don't worry about the remainder; there won't be one.)

Recognise the number Question Shocked

Holy moly; choose a different three numbers… Laughing

3^123456
Since 3^100 = 1 mod 1000
3^123456 = 3^56 = 521 mod 1000

This question took my fancy, it's a percentage question, so Laurel gets the Tryagain unequivocally "with something close to 50%" or something like that. Special Merit Award to markr on this occasion.

Speaking of largely ode, Tryagain's naughty primes 7, 11 and 13 have a thousand and one uses, such as:

which is the odd one out? A E I O U Y?

Mark:

3^123456
Since 3^100 = 1 mod 1000
3^123456 = 3^56 = 521 mod 1000 Cool Cool Cool

For those that are following on; you may have noticed how Mark took three lines to come up with the answer; short, sharp and sweet!

For the rest of us who are not on a diet…

To get rid of the bulk of the multiplying, we want to find the smallest positive p such that 3^p = 1 (mod 1000)

The last digit of 3^m cycles through 3, 9, 7, 1, and is 1 whenever m is a multiple of 4, i.e. when we have powers of 81

By considering
(80+1) * (10t +1) = 800t + 10*(t+8) + 1
we see that the last two digits of these powers cycle through 81, 61, 41, 21, 01, so the last two digits are 01, when 81 is raised to a power which is a multiple of 5, i.e. 3 raised to a power which is a multiple of 20.

81^5 = (80+1)^5 = 1 + 5*80 + 10*80^2 +...+ 80^5
which is 401 (mod 1000), since all but the first two terms are multiples of 1000.

By considering
(400+1) * (100h+1) = 40000h + 100*(h+4) + 1
we see that the last three digits of these powers cycle through 401, 801, 201, 601, 001, so the last three digits are 001 when 3 is raised to a power which is a multiple of 100.

So 3^123456 = 3^123400 * 3^56
= 3^56 (mod 1000)
= 3^40 * 3^ 16 (mod 1000)

3^40 is 3^20 *3^20 = 401*401 = 801 (mod 1000)

3^16 is 81^4 = (80+1)^4 = 1 + 4*80 + 6*6400 + ... = 721 (mod 1000)

Therefore 3^56 = 801 * 721 = 700 + 20 + 801 = 521 (mod 1000)

The first 3 digits are 303 as if anyone really cares. Rolling Eyes

Thank you for the song TTHSlippy wrote, "This question took my fancy, it's a percentage question, so Laurel gets the Tryagain unequivocally "with something close to 50%" or something like that. Special Merit Award to markr on this occasion."

There used to be a time not so long ago, when I used to have a problem with the questions; now, I don't even understand the answers!
You quote Mark but I don't see his answer! Shocked

"7, 11 and 13 have a thousand and one uses" Cool

Clever! Very Happy

Here's why it works: the six-digit number is 1,001-times greater than the three-digit number, which seems logical when you realise that 1,000-times the three-digit number would add three zeros, and another 'one-times' replaces the three zeros with same first three digits.

When you divide by 7, then 11, then 13, this equates to dividing by 1,001 (7 x 11 x 13 = 1,001).

The trick is achieved simply by reversing the calculation: 123 x 1,001 = 123123. Then 123123 ÷ 1,001 = 123.

I agree with Izzie. All the others are guys names abbreviated backwards and GEM is a female name spelled backwards. Is that why?

edit: the one abbreviated backwards is DIS = SIDNEY? The others stand on their own.

Is he; hunky, cute, intelligent and witty? Yeah! I do know him…

Four married guys go fishing. After an hour, the following conversation took place.

First guy: "You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend."

Second guy: "that's nothing; I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool."

Third guy: " Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her." They continue to fish when they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word. So they asked him. You haven't said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend. " What's the deal?"

Fourth guy: "I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the wife a nudge and said, "Fishing or Sex" and Stormy said…….. "Pack a Sweater." Laughing
