Woah! TTH go put your vest on before ya catch a cold! Razz

You must remember the old story:

Five guys were on a plane...Missmi the captain came on the P.A. system and says "Mayday, Mayday! We're going down and there are only four vests on the plane. You guys decide who's staying but I'm jumping now!!!"

Stormy says "I've saved lives my whole life so I think that I should get one," so she jumps.

Mark says "I'm the smartest man in the world. I've solved several thousand riddles so I'm jumpinÂ… bye!"

So Try goes up to TTH and says "I've lived a short but happy life and I know my memory is shot, so you take the last vest and go."

TTH says "No, you grab this one and I'll grab the other one because the smartest man in the world just jumped with my Sparano gym bag!!!!" Laughing

Don't cry for Mark - he turned out fine. TTH likes to be well-equipped; so she had a very large gym bag. Mark, being the svelte individual that he is, was able to get just the friction he needed to slow his descent enough for a safe landing. Turns out, he had sized up the situation in a few nanoseconds and knew that the only way to save the portly Try was to grab the gym bag and leave a vest for Try. His steel trap mind calculated that the bag would provide exactly the friction he needed if he spit out the gum he was chewing. The rest is history, and Mark is a hero...

The crowd roars HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Stormy! AsÂ…

Fat boy Try comes rolling back to celebrate the safe landing of Mark. However, to facilitate the landing he failed to mention he had to slip into a very fetching pink leotard! Personally I would have crash dived. Laughing

Ok! You can take it off now!

In Australian rules football a score is worth either 1 point or 6 points. Cheerleaders raise their pompoms each time their team scores. The number of waves is equal to the number of points scored in total. Eg. If the team scores 1 point they would wave once, and then 6 points, they would wave seven times.

The total number of waves is less than 50 for a match. If I told you what the total number of waves was, you would deduce that the number of occasions on which they waved could be any of three different possibilities.

Even if I then told you on how many occasions they waved, you could still find THREE different orders of 6's and 1's scored that would have led to that total number of waves.

(a) On how many occasions did they wave Question
(b) What was the total number of waves Question

Mark:

WAVES

(a) 5 Cool
(b) 45 Cool

Possibilities are:
1, 1, 6, 6, 6
1, 6, 1, 6, 1
6, 1, 1, 1, 6

All right! We agree. Very Happy

Now to help Thoh out; generate a list of all possible scores which yield less than 50 waves, with the number of waves in front of it (pipe it to 'sort -n' or the like to get a clean result)

"If I told you what the total number of waves was, you would deduce that the number of occasions on which they waved could be any of three different possibilities.''

We have to look for a number of waves that can be reached by three different amount of wave occasions:

36 : [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]
36 : [1, 1, 1, 1, 6, 6]
36 : [1, 1, 1, 6, 1, 1]
36 : [6, 6, 6]

45 : [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]
45 : [1, 1, 6, 6, 6]
45 : [1, 6, 1, 6, 1]
45 : [6, 1, 1, 1, 6]
45 : [6, 1, 6, 6]
45 : [6, 6, 1, 1]

"Even if I then told you on how many occasions they waved, you could still find THREE different orders of 6's and 1's scored that would have led to that total number of waves.''

Among these two groups there should be one which contains three score with the same amount of wave occasions:

45 : [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]
45 : [1, 1, 6, 6, 6]
45 : [1, 6, 1, 6, 1]
45 : [6, 1, 1, 1, 6]
45 : [6, 1, 6, 6]
45 : [6, 6, 1, 1]

So the answers are: Just as Mark has them. Razz

Because I use a font that can't be viewed below the Mason-Dixon line.

Actually, it's to hide my answers so others can take a shot at the problems without being influenced (for good or bad) by my responses.

Turns out the font is completely viewable in the seedier sections of Washington state.
