TRIANGULAR NUMBERS

3*6*21 = 378 Cool
3*10*21 = 630 Cool
3*6*55 = 990 Cool

First off print out all the triangular numbers up to a max of 3 digits. This covers from 1 to 990. Ignoring the 1, look at what the smallest number we were looking for was from 3 triangular numbers, which is 3 x 6 x 10 = 180. 180 is not a triangular number, so look at 3 x 6 x 15 = 270. Again, this is not a triangular number. So look at 3 x 6 x 21 = 378. This is a triangular number, so is likely to be one of our answers.

Next look at the highest number we need to look for. So 3 x 6 = 18. 990 divided by 18 = 55. This just happens to provide us with our second solution, as well as telling us that the only triangular numbers we need to look at range from 3 to 55.

Next was just a bit of trial and error to find a third solution, and it turns out to be 3 x 10 x 21 = 630.

So our 3 solutions are:
3 x 6 x 21 = 378
3 x 6 x 55 = 990
3 x 10 x 21 = 630.

The numbers 55 and 10 appear only in 2 of the solutions, so they must be Mark and Try's solutions.

Therefore, the answer to the question is the numbers 3, 6 and 21.

You just can't fool some people. Laughing

Imagine a 4 x 4 grid. If you place a 1, 2, 3 or 4 in each of the sixteen grid squares, with no digit repeated in any row or column, you end up with a 'Latin square'. You can read eight four-figure numbers in the grid, across the rows and down the columns. All of the four-figure numbers are different, none is a prime, no two are reverses of each other, and:

(1st column x 3rd column) divided by (2nd row x 3rd row) is greater than 4.

LATIN SQUARE

3241 Cool
1432 Cool
2314 Cool
4123 Cool

- write down all 24 permutations of 1234
- first you rule out all prime numbers, so 20 remain
- you can determine the few possibilities of elements (1,1), (1,3), (2,1) and (2,2) by the division constraint.

Then start by selecting a random possible first line and rule out all of the 19 other permutations that don't fit in a Latin Square knowing that you can't use reversed lines either; this really brings the possibilities down to a doable number…Better still wait for Mark. Laughing

Miss mi, how very nice to see you have been released from jail. I have always believed in your innocence…and fairies! How did your trip go?

It was great Try. We stayed in this cabin and grilled steaks and had baked sweet potatoes Friday night - drank plenty of wine and laughed - it was so fun! Then made smores by the fire inside. Saturday we got up and out early hiked down to Little River and played for a long time. Hiked back and ate lunch and watched football. No lie...all girls watching Auburn play Georgia and drank beer and laughed! It was a blast. Glad to be home - but kind of sad it is behind me now....did ya' miss me? Razz
