Hey blue guy, Try, I don't understand your question. How many numbers are in the equation or is that what MARK or THOH are suppose to figure out Laughing

Oh sure there have been injuries and deaths in boxing - but none of them serious, which is why I spent 90% of my money on women and drink………………. The rest I wasted!

"I don't understand your question."

Please do not reproach yourself dear lady, that was one SOB question, designed to eliminate any possible answer. Therefore, it was all the remarkable when Mark replied…

Mark:

PHONE NUMBER

You've gone from 7-digit numbers to 8-digit numbers.
Your new number is 10246897. * Cool Cool Cool

*It certainly could have been and a great effort; but as we are looking for the smallest possible prime. May I proffer…

The probability of the first digit not being 3 is 8/9 (since not starting with zero, but allowing 1..9).

The probability of each following digit not being 3 is 9/10.

The probability of no 3 in N digits would be the product of these.

For 2 digits this is 8/9 * 9/10 i.e. 0.8
For 3 digits, 0.72
For 4 digits, 0.648
For 5 digits, 0.5832
For 6 digits, 0.52488
For 7 digits, 0.472392.

To have "at least one 3" would be 1 minus the product above, hence the "old" phone number had six digits, and the "new" must have 7.

That was the easy part: what is required is the lowest prime > 1024567 and < 9876542, which has no digit 3…..

I think 1024579 will do.

PHONE NUMBERS
I see how I screwed up. When computing the number of n-digit numbers without a 3, I removed numbers shorter than n digits. However, when computing the total number of n-digit numbers, I forgot to remove numbers shorter than n digits.

Ah, at last I have triumphed with the word things, what a day it is turning out to be!

Mark, a common and understandable oversight and one I know only too well. Laughing

Now to make it three zip to me…
Consider the following three Anglo-Italian sums:

(a) FOUR + FOUR = OTTO
(b) TWO + TRE + FIVE = DIECI
(c) THREE + NOVE = DODICI

Digits have been consistently replaced by capital letters, different letters being used for different digits.

However, the three sums are entirely distinct - a letter does not need to have the same value in one as it does in the others.
No number starts with a zero.

What are the numbers represented by OTTO, DIECI and DODICI Question

TTH interceded, " I think #b is 10740, not 30."

Is this a joke! Laughing

The enigma consists of three independent letter/digit substitution problems, since the assignments for any one of the equations do not preclude different assignments in another of the equations. However the specs also do not preclude using the same assignment in different equations.

In fact, "D" = 1 in both (b) and (c).

There is only one assignment set for (a). There are six possible assignment sets for (b) but all yield the same value for DIECI. There are two possible assignment sets for (c) but both yield the same value for DODICI. Hence we have unique values for the three Italian totals (eight, ten, twelve), which is all that the enigma requires.

OTTO = 2552
DIECI = 10730
DODICI = 101626

CLOCKS

"That's next weekend." Shocked Shocked Drunk

That would explain the damn machine not recording the film. Stupid Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Mountain Time.

Why oh why did nobody tell me that on Monday August 8, 2005 President Bush signed into law a broad energy bill (Energy Policy Act of 2005) that will extend Daylight Saving Time by four weeks in 2007.

The provisions of the bill call for Daylight Saving Time to begin three weeks earlier on the second Sunday in March and end one week later on the first Sunday in November. Previously, Daylight Saving Time started on the first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.

I can't be a keeping up with the pace of change. Did they move Christmas also?

Ok, so lets start with a small rectangular block with one end a square, ABCD, and with a correspondingly labelled square at the other end, A*B*C*D*. Two cuts are made through the block, one through the plane ACD* and the other through the plane A*C*D. This cut the block into four pieces, and the smallest three pieces were discarded.

The volume of the remaining piece is a two-figure number of cubic centimetres. By coincidence, in that number, each of the two digits was the length of one of the sides of the original rectangular block.

What, in cubic centimetres, is the volume of this remaining piece Question
