The worlds first riddle!

Relative explains 1427 crossings: Relative made a mistake, he only counted 357 men, and forgot the poor officer. He unknowingly liberated a small patch of pacifists waiting to get rid of their captain..
Why not 1428? The last ride, the child returning with a boat, is unnecessary. Although the riddle says '..leave the two children finally in joint possession of their boat..' the two children are in joint possesion of the boat without the last crossing.

Relative has thus explained himself and his bloody mistake.

"One--- the north pole"

I wrote, "The same place where a scientist lives in a hut from which he walks one kilometer directly south. He then hikes exactly one kilometre directly east. He then sees a bear and in terrible fright runs for one kilometre directly north back to the hut."

What colour was the bear?

The answer is obvious, if you are standing at the north pole it doesn't matter which way you walk you are heading south. You walk 1 K. south, 1k east and 1k north you are back where you started.

If you are anywhere else on earth and you walk 1k south, 1k east and 1k north you would be 1k EAST of where you started.

Oh, and the bear must be white cos its a polar bear.

If Magnum disagrees with that then either its a gag and not a riddle or Magnum is wrong.

try answerd the riddle by posting an other riddle

and the answer to that riddle is that the bear is white, i just say that the northpole is not the only place think about for one day, or 2 :wink:

maybe mou can think of something

magnum : "and the answer to that riddle is that the bear is white, i just say that the northpole is not the only place think about for one day, or 2"

The answer to that question is also a circle 1+1/(2*pi) km away from the south pole. Begin on any point, go 1km south (you are at the circle 1/(2*pi)km from the pole). 1km east gets you around the earth to the same piont back, and 1km north gets you to the original point.

South pole itself is NOT the solution, as well as circle 1km from south pole. BUT, all circles with
d = 1+1/(2*k*PI) are the solution, with k=1,2,3,..
In the limit, when k approaches infinity, we get close to the 1km radius circle, but the limit itself is not a solution (because of singularity when going east).

Well, it took me more that 2 days, but here it is.

Relative.

A ton.=not. Very Happy

I think 8 coins.
50% of 8 = 4 fall in first hole
50% of the remaining 4 = 2 fall in the second hole.
50% of the remaining 2 = 1 fall in the third hole.
1 makes it to the end of slide.
Absolutely brilliant. Very Happy

"maybe you could remind me! which answers???? (The PM) which I ?'lost'

The debate ?'Hots up'
"I just say that the northpole is not the only place think about for one day, or 2"

"If Magnum disagrees with that then either its a gag and not a riddle or Magnum is wrong"

"South pole itself is NOT the solution"

Magnum, after consulting his lawyers will shortly be making a statement. (It is believed he has ?'found' a second North Pole. :wink:

"1427 crossings; clever officer"
"and forgot the poor officer"
"…thus explained himself and his bloody mistake."

Is (you know who) loosing it? The ?'committee' has brought to my attention that, the cannonball/boat and the officer/boat, has caused the ?'Wind surfer' H2O problems. Is there anyone out there with medical knowledge who can help? :wink:

I also know that he has failed to give an opinion on,
"Relative is sailing down a river that is going at 3 kilometres per hour. There is no wind. Should he raise the sail in order to go faster." Question

A criminal escaped from prison. Urgently hunted by police, he ran into a beauty salon. Threatening the beautician he found there with death, he ordered the man to disguise him. The beautician thought about it and complied with the demand. When the work was done, the wanted man was quite satisfied with the result--he looked at himself in the mirror and he couldn't see his old self at all. He then tied up the beautician so that he couldn't call police, and walked out into the street, feeling quite secure.
And yet, the first police man who saw him put him under arrest.

How come Question

MyO and Whim went to a theme party one night. The rule for the gathering is that some people speak only truth while others tell nothing but lies. This, of course, kept everyone guessing about the identity of everybody else--are they truth-tellers or liars.

After walking around for a while, MyO came back to Whim and whispered: "See that girl over there? She just revealed her identity to me. She said she's a liar."

Should Whim believe MyO Question

There are three playing cards lying face up, side by side. A four is just to the right of a three. A four is just to the left of a four. A diamond is just to the left of a heart, and a diamond is just to the right of a diamond. What are the three cards Question

A boy and a girl are sitting on the porch.
"I'm a boy," says the child with black hair.
"I'm a girl," says the child with red hair.
If at least one of them is lying, who is which Question

Of course, all good riddlers are familiar with the time-honoured problem of the man who had to ferry a fox, a goose, and some corn across a river in a boat which would carry but two at a time. The story of the four elopements, equally old, is built upon similar lines, but presents so many complications that the best or shortest answer seems to have been overlooked by mathematicians who have considered the subject.

It is told that four men eloped with their sweethearts, but in carrying out their plan were compelled to cross a stream in a boat which would hold but two persons at a time. In the middle of the stream, as shown in the sketch, there is a small island. It appears that the young men were so extremely jealous that not one of them would permit his prospective bride to remain at any time in the company of any other man or men unless he was also present.

Nor was any man to get into a boat alone when there happened to be a girl alone, on the island or shore, other than the one to whom he was engaged. This leads one to suspect that the girls were also jealous and feared that their fellows would run off with the wrong girl if they got a chance. Well, be that as it may, the problem is to guess the quickest way to get the whole party across the river.

Let us suppose the river to be two hundred metres wide, with an island in the middle on which any number can stand.

How many trips would the boat make to get the four couples safely across in accordance with the imposed conditions Question

Disclaimer: Due to the water/boat contents of this question, anyone with a allergy should not attempt it. :wink:

Late breaking news…

It has been reported that, both Adrian and Magnum have been seen in the children's HP thread. If this is true (and I don't believe it) it would be very sad that the ?'Mighty' have fallen so low. Crying or Very sad

I can understand Adrian being keen to re-live his youth before he forgets, but not Magnum who is in the prime of life, with so much to live for. Please tell me it's not true. :wink:

"you call me a liar??"

In my village there are, lies, damn lies and journalists. Cool
For those with spring allergies. I have found a spoonful of vinegar, yes vinegar, works a treat.

Tim and Tom were playing their Dad's old favourite game machine - a classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game was, surprisingly, Duck Hunt. Tom was at the controls, shooting innocent ducks with the lightgun.

Tim pokes Tom, and whines, "let me play." Tom looks back, and Mum is looking at them, so Tom begins to feel generous.

"Tell ya what, Tim. If you can answer a riddle about ducks, you can play. Otherwise, I get a half an hour more."

Tim, who occasionally can be a dunce, happily says "OK!".

Tom asks his question, "How many ducks do you have if you have two ducks in front of two ducks, two ducks behind two ducks, and two ducks between two ducks?"

Tim is stumped. "15?"

"Nope," says Tom.

"12?"

"Nope."

Exasperated, Tim says, "Ok, what is the answer?"

When Tom tells him, Mom goes off smiling, Tim stomps off, and Tom gets the high score on the game.

"Should Whim believe MyO"
No!

"What are the three cards?"

4 diamonds, 3 diamonds, 4 hearts

"If at least one of them is lying, who is which?"

If the child with black hair is lying, it must be a girl.
But then the red haired child must be lying too
since there are a boy and girl on the porch.
So boy = red hair
girl = black hair

this the same problem as the question of the bridge
no one can say he's/she's a liar cause if a persons always tells the truth it would be a lie, and if a liar said that he told the truth. So with that in mind Myo is a Liar ( with a capital L Wink)

This week sees the start of the very hardest riddles ever devised. Think twice before you answer, then think again. Twisted Evil

The bells of the clock tower signal six o'clock (with 6 loud rings) in 5 seconds.
How long will it take for the bells to signal twelve o'clock (midday) Question

Two and a half artists spend two and a half hours painting two and a half models on two and a half canvases.

How many artists are necessary to paint twenty-four models on twenty-four canvases in twenty hours. Question

Colonel Whim, during his fifth space mission, was being kept awake by the blabbering of the Cape Canaveral Control Centre operator, who offered him the following puzzle.

"Here's a deck of 52 cards, Whim. I'm taking the Aces and the Royals out of the deck. Do you copy that, Whim?"

"Roger," the yawning voice of the astronaut answered.

"Of the 36 remaining cards, I've drawn 5 of them. These 5 cards have the following properties:

(a) all four suits are represented here;

(b) there is no more than 2 consecutive ranks for each sequence (ie a 2 followed by a 3, or a 7 by an 8, or both, but not 2, 3, 4);

(c) the sum of the even ranks and the sum of the odd ranks produce two numbers: the difference between these two numbers is 9, but I won't specify whether it's the sum of odds being greater than the sum of evens, or vice versa.

(d) the sum of ranks of the red cards is exactly twice the sum of ranks of the black cards.

You awake, Whim?"

After a pause, Whim managed a faint "Roger."
"Ok, you should also know that:

(e) a hearts is a multiple of a clubs;

(f) the rank of a diamond is greater than that of a hearts;

(g) there are no 2 cards with the same rank.

Which cards did I draw? Whim, are you listening? Which cards have I got?"

Deduce which five cards he necessarily holds. Question
