stu thanks for the sentiments, you are a dear imo, however it can be 24.

It depends on how you read the sentences. If you start out at 24 and remove 1/3 then you have 16.

Remaining candles from the original 24, another 1/3 of that is 8 so remove another 8 and that leaves you with 8.
