"the sphere is circumscribed about the cube). This means that the sphere passes through the eight vertices of the cube.

If the surface area of the cube is 60 square inches, what the heck is the surface area of the sphere Question

mmm... hanyu

sphere:

30 pi....
SA of cube is 60..so each face is 10...so each side is sqrt(10)
so the diagonal through the cube is d^2 = sqrt(10)^2 + sqrt(10)^2 + sqrt(10)^2 = 30...so d=sqrt(30) which is also the diameter of the sphere so
SA sphere = pi*d^2 = pi*sqrt(30)^2 = 30 pi

I happened to be speaking with my mom last night and curiousity got the better of me so I said "mom, I want to say something in German to you.
Don't say anything Then I will tell you what I think it means and could you then tell me if I am right?"

I spoke that sentence to her in German and I thought she was going to have a heart attack she was laughing so hard. I said "mom quit laughing so I can tell you (in English) what I think it means."

I told her in English what I thought it meant.

She said "du bist ein freches mensch" (sp? cap?) I said "Mom, that is not fair since I didn't come up with that sentence" She said to go tell the person who did then. Tryagain: du bist ein frecher mensch Laughing Laughing Laughing because my mom said so  Laughing

I apologize if this is considered "off-topic" but, you said the sentence so I figured it is fair game.

[size=8]DIE
There are 19521 ways to exceed 12. Here's the breakdown:

13: 3840
14: 3777
15: 3652
16: 3404
17: 2912
18: 1936

So, the most likely total is 13. However, the expected value is 15.1833.

What a great answer Mark has come up with, one that will stand the test of time. Razz

The way to get a final total of 13 is to build up some total between 7 and 12 inclusive, then make a single throw of the appropriate value.

The way to get a final total of 14 is to build up some total between 8 and 12 inclusive, then make a single throw of the appropriate value.

Thus if we take the list of sequences producing 14, then subtract 1 from the final throw of each sequence, we will have part but not all of the list of sequences producing 13.

Moreover, corresponding sequences are equally likely to occur, because they contain the same number of throws. Thus 13 is strictly more likely than 14.

A similar argument shows that 14 is strictly more likely than 15, and so on. Hence 13 is the most likely total.

Interesting that nobody could answer the chicken conundrum, I take comfort from that and post another unanswerable ripper…

Rap a famous tattooed biker wants to tour five cities in one day: Alpha, Beta, Calcity, Derive, & Epsilon; located at (1,0), (2,3), (-2,4), (5,-1), and (-3,-2), respectively.

He wants to see all cities (not necessarily in that order) and travels from town to town in straight lines. (With them bull bars he can't turn corners)

What is the shortest total distance possible Question
Where should he start Question
What is the sequence of cities he visits Question

[size=8]BIKER TOUR
I measure thoh13's route at 17.718 units (sqrt(20)+2*sqrt(17)+5).

A shorter route is ECBAD (or its reverse), which is sqrt(37)+2*sqrt(17)+sqrt(10) = 17.491 units.

Congratulations, when's the big day? Laughing

Chickens:

a) 66 2/3 Cool
b) 1 1/2 Cool
c) 1 1/2 Cool

Damn, the chickens have come home to roost.

(a): 1 chicken can lay 20/3 eggs in 10 days so
10 chickens can lay 10 times that amount in the same number of days, so
10 chickens can lay 200/3 or 66 2/3 eggs in 10 days.
10 chickens x 10 days x 2/3 egg/chicken/day = 66 2/3 eggs

(b): 1 chicken can lay 2/3 egg in 1 day, so
10 chickens can lay 20/3 eggs in 1 day, so
10 chickens can lay 20/3x3/2 = 10 eggs in 3/2 days.
Twice as many chickens would lay twice as many eggs in the same amount of time, so 10 chickens lay 10 eggs in 1 1/2 days

(c): 1 chicken can lay 1 egg in 3/2 day, so
1 chicken can lay 20/3 eggs in 10 days, so
3/2 chickens can lay 10 eggs in 10 days.
1 1/2 chickens can lay an egg per day so they can lay 10 eggs in 10 days.

BIKER TOUR
I measure thoh13's route at 17.718 units (sqrt(20)+2*sqrt(17)+5). Shocked

Yup! ECBAD is indeed the shortest distance of 17.4913 units.

Idea Just use Djikstra's algorithm to find the starting point. Djikstra's algorithm (named after its discover, E.W. Dijkstra) solves the problem of finding the shortest path from a point in a graph (the source) to a destination.

The sum of the current ages of Gus and TTH is 89 years. Some years ago, when Gus's age was equal to the woman's current age, she was half as old as he was.

What are the current ages of the man and woman ?

can 1 chicken and 1/2 chicken do anything to lay an egg? I don't know how chickens do "it". For humans and animals it takes two. Laughing

Gus = 53.4 and TTH = 35.6
G + T = 89... G - x = T... T/2 = T - x... T = 2x... G = 3x... x = 17.8... T = 35.6... G = 53.4
