Verizon Wireless network?

A new guy came breezing in, store employee in tow. She showed him the inventory, explaining about pillows for side versus back sleepers and which one she personally used. Those of us in the crowd, now resembling the Verizon Wireless network, shuffled inconspicuously close enough to hear the scoop.

Why did the author said that those of us in the crowd resembled the Verizon Wireless network?

I think it's a reference to a TV commercial, where some guy who's on Verizon (it's a phone compahy in the US) has hundreds of people behind him shuffling around with him as he moves, who are supposed to represent the help you can get if you're on the Verizon wireless network.

I'd say it's a fairly obscure reference, and only works for you if you watch a lot of (American) TV. And, worse yet, remember it.
