Loneliness, the low paying job, my self-assigned place in the world, all evaporate.

The author was a high-school dropout and serves oily tacos. She wrote this sentence when she went into a university bookstore in the first time.

I don't know what does the phrase " self-assigned place in the world".

@Nancy88,

The low paying job, the loneliness were symptoms of a woman who never tried to climb above her reality, she chose her life, her place in the world. Whether we like it or not, some of us are paupers and others are princes. Whether we choose to see it or not, there is a subtle caste system almost everywhere. Sometimes we can overcome our station in life but many of us limit ourselves and never reach for the stars, we settle with where, whom or what we think we deserve.
