Should "song" be "songs"?

Context (by Moss Roberts)

The Phoenix winging on the air
Will choose no tree
Except the wu.
The scholar keeping to his lair
Will have no lord
Except the true.
Oh, let me till these furrowed fields,
By this sweet home
That I call mine.
In books and song I place my dreams
And wait the time
The fates assign.

No, it should not. Apart from the fact that you don't get to "correct" other people's poetry after it is written, this is a proper usage of the word song. In this case, song can mean the act of singing, or it can mean the writing of poetry--or it can mean both.

Note also that "song" can be a plural noun.

I can speak of "song" meaning to include all songs,
like "literature" includes all books.
