I have no idea hat ought to be put in those blanks; however, the sentence quote above is completely nonsensical in English. Who are the "they" who can hit the theif on the head? Who fainted?

The blanks are CAN and THREW. From the third sentence, you see that the can hit the thief.

Yes, CAN and THREW fill in the blanks.

The second sentence doesn't make sense.

"The can hit the thief on the head and fainted" means the can fainted after hitting the thief. Also, fainting is different from being knocked unconscious from being hit in the head with a can.

You would need to say "The can hit the thief on the head and he was knocked unconscious." Or "The can hit the thief on the head, knocking him unconscious."
