What does the sentence mean? The sentence was said by a person who thought himself as being generous in his praise.
What is the phrase the unsupecting mean here?

He compliments people sometimes when they least expect it. It's like telling a complete stranger you like their hair or the shirt they're wearing. He does it to make someone happy or lift their spirits when they appear down or sad.

So much for the silly prescription that in English one must use he/him/his for the gender neutral pronoun.
