I am having problems with knowing the when to use has not and has no
Which is correct Water has no colour or water has not colour...??

Water has no colour.

You would say "I'm no dummy" or "I'm not a dummy". Look up the definitions of the two words and see if that helps.

Use this example as an example:

I have no answer for you. (notice a noun phrase 'no answer')
I have not answered your question. (notice the verb phrase 'not answered').

However, when and if you use the phrases as indicated, either is correct.

Ín sentence water has no colour", it's short for "water has not any colour." The verb phrase ís 'has not any'.

With Water has no colour', 'no color' is a noun phrase.


So my advice is: you can use either "Water has no colour" or "water has not ANY colour." One sentence is as good as the other.

Agreed. It was poor phrasing on my part. I shouldve said that could be considered an alternative way of expressing. However, I hope the main point was made clear.
