@roger,
Years ago I figured out that some short words just look wrong if you stare at them long enough. This can be disconcerting.

I misspelled 'weird' for decades. I most often misspell sound-alike words such as hear for here, their for they're - my fingers being faster than my brain.
I too have been known to screw up the spelling of broccoli, but I think of the movie Rocco and his brothers and set myself straight. I often mistype 'and' for 'am' - another brain fart through my fingertips.

Oh, that one! I know there is a 'u' in there, somewhere, but no matter where I put it, it just doesn't look right.

@Lash,
Speaking of rank, how about colonal? Who would guess that from a word that sounds like kernel?

Not that I'm trying to suck David into this. . . .

@roger,
See - colonel is where I'd throw up my hands if I was an English learner. Collapsed in a heap in the women's lounge, crying and cursing.

When I'm in a typing storm I always type "it's" for both the conjunction and the possessive meaning.

I also can never remember how to spell "rhythm."

de rigueur - I could probably guess at spelling it correctly, but fail, fail, fail at saying it correctly.

You couldn't possibly say it wrong, Osso. You are a native English speaker, are you not?
