Context:

Specific gene defects in apoptosis pathways interfere with death of activated lymphocyte and thereby disrupt central and/or peripheral tolerance thus conferring a greatly increased risk for autoimmunity [7]. The highly variable autoimmune expressions and phenotypic presentations can be attributed to modifying effects resulting directly from environmental infiuences or indirectly to epigenetic changes (Thomas Fleisher, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD).
