Movember - Mustaches for Cancer

I just heard of the Movember movement to fight prostate cancer. Is this the men's health equivalent to pink ribbons? Why didn't I know earlier? It takes me forever to grow a mustache.

When the hell did "Mo" become slang for moustache?

@engineer,
there's a big Movember challenge going on at our company

fellows at different branches across the country are battling it out

they post individual/team photos on the intranet weekly

they've raised good $ already

I've heard a lot of nicknames for moustaches (some of which I can't say here), but never a Mo.

@chai2,
I think it started in Australia -- not sure it's as common here.

@dadpad,
Actually it dates back to at least to WW2 - witness this propaganda song supporting Joseph Stalin becoming an 'Ally' against Hitler

They stole it from HoMo’s. Personally I like my men with a little razor stubble.

Even if they scored that $250 tax credit for growing a mustache from the US IRS as a charitable tax write-off I wouldn't being falling into these heard of sheep. Rolling Eyes

Movember: Do men with mustaches deserve a tax break?
Movember, in which men grow – or attempt to grow – mustaches for charity kicks off on Tuesday. The American Mustache Institute is calling for a $250 tax incentive for facial hair on the upper lip.

So, this is pink think equivalent.

I'm one of the few people attuned who don't like the whole pink thing. Programmed pink on earth, I do not like it, though I get individual pinks. I think of it as constructed milking.

So, now on to moustaches.

@ossobuco,
I think of it more as the 'shave your head for cancer' thing - or is that just Australia too? Weird how anti you americans seem to be, it's just a bit of fun for a good cause here - and a gentle way to take the piss out of yourself (with your friends' help too, I'm finding).

@hingehead,
Some friends and family of friends are Movembering again this year. I'm a big fan. Brings attention to something that wasn't talked about years ago - gets guys out for their check-ups, fundraises - and is lots of fun.

@hingehead,
Last year, for the first time Canada out Mo'd the Ozzies. I think it's a great cause, one it raises a whole bunch of money for cancer and secondly, it raises awareness of prostrate cancer, a leading killer of men. I'm surprised it hasn't caught on in the States myself....

@Ceili,
My suspicion is always that people are hurling money in hope and grief to groups who eat the money up before it ever gets to actual labs doing research.

I'd rather give to the labs doing research.

Lazy as I am, I can't prove my point of view.

I suppose overwhelming money will get some portion to the researchers.

I'm trying to let you by, Ceili, re prostrate cancer, but I can't help it, as it is so commonly spelled that way, the usage may take over. Prostate.

@ossobuco,
Prostrate cancer - you only get it when you're lying down Smile
