"to a lesser extent" in this context means less commonly seen than those in the previous list. It contrasts with "particularly" which I would equate to especially.

hmmmm... now that I'm rereading this, I think "to a lesser extent" is contrasting viral infections to bacterial infections rather than the entire list preceding it. The grammar gurus can weigh in, but I think the format

"...include particularly w, x, and y and to a lesser extent z"

is contrasting z and y, not z to all of w, x, and y.
