Maybe

The mutation my only provide the environment or framework to allow the syndrome to flourish. The cause may be something different.

The environment or framework may be present but the syndrome is not active or a problem until the cause is also present.

Why are we TALKING about a previously concieved concept? Language is language. How could it possibly matter? What's the prelevance here....
