Context:

APECED is recognized by the co-occurrence at an early age of
resistant mucocutaneous candidiasis with supervening autoim-
mune endocrinopathies, especially adrenal and parathyroid defi-
ciencies. The occurrence of APECED in humans is associated with
mutant alleles of the Autoimmune Regulator (AIRE) gene [9]. Some
features of APECED can be reproduced in mice by genetically
engineered deficiencies in aire [10].

@Francis,
Thanks.

Logically speaking, it is.
But grammatically wrong. The aire has to be capitalized.

@oristarA,
If you use the prescriptivist stance, yes..

Note, however, that many a scientific publication don't care...

@oristarA,
Not necessarily--many disciplines have their own rules of style and publish their own style manuals. In the realm of scientific publishing, some disciplines issue style manuals, and others don't. As Francis points out, some editors don't even care. Specialists reading these articles will know what is meant, and the editors don't really care if non-specialists readers (if there are any) understand or don't. I don't know if there is an "ordained" style for genetics, but i suspect there isn't.
