Not necessarily--many disciplines have their own rules of style and publish their own style manuals. In the realm of scientific publishing, some disciplines issue style manuals, and others don't. As Francis points out, some editors don't even care. Specialists reading these articles will know what is meant, and the editors don't really care if non-specialists readers (if there are any) understand or don't. I don't know if there is an "ordained" style for genetics, but i suspect there isn't.
