Quasi philosophic scrubs who ruin the fun...

What has happened to the quality of posters here on a2k?

Used to be you could post an idea, and people would make intelligent objections, creative suggestions and interesting conversation.

Now all I encounter are people out to validate their own sense of being intelligent and philosophic. They think a discussion is a battle. It is easy to spot them. They will misunderstand your statements, expand on the misunderstanding and proceed to argue against words they put in your mouth, as if they were your words.

One particular scrub even went so far as to put me on ignore after the fourth or fifth time I asked him to give an argumentation for his claims. Fair enough, but then he doesn't have the decency to stay away from threads I make.

Is this what a2k has become? If so my years of participation have come to an end.

A final question: If you are not prepared to entertain notions that may not be true, for the sake of thought experiments, just what the h... are you doing on a philosophy forum?

If you wish to see an example of what I am talking about, check out the thread named "Truth is a choice".

@djjd62,
I would like to voice my subjective agreement.

But what really gets to me is when people start to diagnose you based on their failure to understand your statements, without offering argumentation for the claims they make.
If someone tells me that my idea is wrong I am prepared to listen and admit it if it turns out that it really is wrong. But for that to happen those who challenge my idea have to provide their reasoning so that we can judge the soundness of it together. But these scrubs I am talking about just offer their opinions and expect you to just believe it, and when you ask them to explain their reasoning they put you on ignore.... Very frustrating when you are seeking open minded people who are willing to play with ideas, not just police forums looking for ideas that are not written a thousand years ago and thus have to be false...

Give me Setanta, for instance, with his file for a tounge, any day over these scrubs. At least when he tells you you are a deluded fool he has the courtesy to explain the reasoning behind his disagreement. And then it is even possible to admit that he is absolutely right, it has happened on some occasions. I can look past insults, but not when insults are all that is being offered...

This seems to have been the opinion of many of the philosophy forum refugees--that all opinions are created equal, and that it is bad form to criticize what they write. It is really ludicrous, in fact, since so little of it makes sense, and you find threads in which a half dozen or so people will be spouting nonsense to one another, none of it remotely pertinent to the alleged subject of the thread.

I doubt that there's anything to be done about it, and recently, several of these goofs have invaded threads which are not concerned with someone's ideosyncratic and quixotic notions of what constitutes philosophy.

@Setanta,
I fear you are right that there is nothing to be done.

I can't help but notice the absurdity when someone who has just read about Plato, for instance, use their newfound enlightenment to ridicule modern scientists and thinkers who present ideas that don't agree with naive-realism..

One of the things i found the most pathetic and funny was that so many of these jokers showed up behaving as though no one here had ever heard of philosophy, or knew anything about it. A few times i pointed out that there had been a philosophy forum here for years and years before they showed up--but it went right over their heads. It is particularly poignant to be insulted by people who don't have the most basic forensic skills.

That is why I'd rather be insulted by you. Wink

@Cyracuz,
A2K is a constantly changing collection of personalities. I doubt it will ever reach a stable end point.

@rosborne979,
While that is true, you shouldn't ignore that an incredible collection of goofballs showed up here as refugees from the shut-down philosophy forum. As someone who is primarily interested in philosophical questions, the distress Cyracuz experiences is understandable, and in my opinion, reasonable.

@Setanta,
That may be true, but I was trying to give him some reason to "hang in there", since conditions are likely to change.

@rosborne979,
I hope you are right.

Tonight was particularly rough, and it felt good to vent a little in this thread. Thanks for listening.

@Cyracuz,
A2K is a microcosm of the internet itself, the abundance of information has been obscured by the overabundance of specious nonsense.

@rosborne979,
Yes.

It is no secret that I am sometimes a contributor to this nonsense. But I always try to explain myself. I can suffer any amount of nonsense as long as the discussion is a negotiation in the interest of arriving at a clearer understanding of whatever the topic is.

@Cyracuz,
We all contribute to the nonsense sometimes, everything is a matter of degree.

Just curious.
But is the proposed new ex-Philosophy Forum members' site (which was being promoted a few months ago) up & running now? (I have no idea of what it might be called.)
I haven't seen a number of those folk (quite a few of whose contributions I really enjoyed) around here for ages.

@Cyracuz,
Most problems has an easy solution, for me I put people on ignore that has no intellectual value to me.

Your problem is 2 fold in "Truth is a choice", there are babbeling idiots and pepole who has a superior intellectual capacity who will mowe you down. You have a problem we have discussed earlier, the sooner you admit it to youself and solve it, the sooner you can engange on a higher lvl of philosophy.

@HexHammer,
I spotted the babbling idiots in that thread. But where are those with superior intellectual capacity? There isn't a single person in that thread that has, as of now, given a clearly stated, reasonable explanation of why and how my ideas are incorrect. There are some who have made interesting comments, asked for clarifications and all in all helped make the thread interesting. But I do not believe that someone picking up the thread now will bother to sift those posts from all the meaningless arguing going in in there...

Robert advises they're behind in setting up their group.

I hope enough of them have stuck around to make it worth his while to develop the group for them - and I hope they hustle off to enjoy it when it's ready.
