So, um, could you apologize to my husband for something from 20 years ago? No reason.

@JTT,
Quote:
I never bought Anita's story hook, line and sinker. When somebody shows up at a confirmation hearing, having had years to complain about alleged improprieties,... I cast a wary eye. She was used by Democrats, and obviously made gravy from her story. Coulda been partially accurate, coulda been completely accurate. If I was Thomas' wife and believed he was innocent, I might write a book, might add my opinion on a lecture tour, but this phone call was embarrassing.

My point was to answer your question.

How did she "make gravy"?

Lots of odd contorting to try to act as if she didn't profit... and "I'M" pigheaded?

@Lash,
I don't believe I said, or even suggested you were pigheaded, Lash.

I just wonder what is wrong with being involved in the discussion of issues that one was central to. Is it necessary to reject the profits for work one does? Does that then ensure that the person is telling the truth?

She profited from expending her energy writing a book. She profited from expending her energy giving speeches and lectures.

And I still don't know where the truth lies, but as you've admitted, "coulda been completely accurate".

More bad news for Ms. Thomas. Both the Washington Post and MSNBC ran stories today from former girlfriends and co-workers of Judge Thomas. They have come forward on the record and verified Anita Hill's remarks before the Committee. Apparently they lucked out in 1991 and didn't get ensnared in the net of scrutiny that was flopped over Thomas as it is normally done every time a Supreme Court Justice is vetted. Whoopsie.

@engineer,
He died in November of 1987, the day after Thanksgiving. My mother-in-law and one of his students' father established a scholarship for English freshmen, given each semester. I don't think it's a large amount of money, more of an academic honor to recognize achievement. We occassionally get thank you notes from receipients, and less occassionally the actual papers that won the scholarship. I made the mistake once of asking if the scholarship still had enough funds to cover whatever amount they were presenting....they said it was fine, but I never pick up the phone anymore if it's from TU, because they think it could be better.

Milton was his passion. He was also a very entertaining man with varied interests in music and film.

When were you there?

Do you have links for this info? I'm not coming up with anything. Thanks.

@glitterbag,
I was there when he was teaching. Maybe he was my Sci Fi teacher.

She's bringing what was left of her husband's reputation?

there's a bit of a difference between "didn't net anything" and your starting point

c'mon. really.

Many posters have commented that she made money (good on her), but very wealthy is a whole different ball of wax.

@ehBeth,
I have no doubt she's wealthy to my standard. The continuing ability to speak for thousands of dollars is an awesome boon as far as I'm concerned. Disagreements seem like splitting hairs.
Definition of WEALTHY
1
: having wealth : very affluent
2
: characterized by abundance : ample
Definition of WEALTH
1
obsolete : weal, welfare
2
: abundance of valuable material possessions or resources
3
: abundant supply : profusion
4
a : all property that has a money value or an exchangeable value b : all material objects that have economic utility; especially : the stock of useful goods having economic value in existence at any one time <national wealth>

I think my opinion is basic, and everyone else's here seems to come with subjective attachments.

Does an opinion which is 'basic' have greater validity than an opinion which is not 'basic'? Actually, I must admit that I don't know what a basic opinion is.

You yourself, in your explanation, admitted that so much of this was subjective, that you were being subjective. I think the whole affair is pretty much full of subjective and lacking much in objective.

@JTT,
Was referring to the basic definition of wealthy, JT. This is really a waste of our time. It appears people were a bit desperate to find a pro-Thomas poster...didn't...and took the next best thing...someone who didn't immediately believe Hill's story without reservation. Much ado about nothing.

@eoe,

This "other woman," Angela Wright had a credibility problem. Clarence Thomas fired her from EEOC after she called a fellow staff member "a faggot."

@jespah,
I think, that like most whistle blowers, she was the one hurt... History has proved that Clarance Thomas is white, and cursed with black skin that makes him watch bad porn and crave intelligent women....

Virginia Thomas is right that twenty years is a long time to wait for an apology and it's time to clear the air. Clarence Thomas should apologize to Anita Hill today.

Or he might have showed poor judgement as a mentor.

I wonder if he knew his wife was going to do this. He couldn't have, ... no, he couldn't have.

I think that even the senators conceded that they had made a mistake in dragging in Anita Hill for PUBLIC testimony. I can easily believe that Hill wanted her involvement to end with the interview that she gave to the FBI. Therefore, the bottom line is that Hill has nothing to apologize for. It was the media and political elements in this story that created such an embarrassing circus.

If her testimony was truthful.

@engineer,
I suppose it's possible. I need to check with mr. glitterbag, but I'm pretty sure he was strictly English lit. I don't know if he taught Sci Fi, but since we live in Maryland and he lived in LA, perhaps I've forgotten something, we lost him on Nov 27th 1987. It was a difficult time for us, he was only 49. But I remember he had keen interest in everything, music, film, opera, fine dining, social events, international happenings, he was like a party in a bottle.

He was born in Johnston County, N.C., his grandfather and father had been tobacco and cotten farmers, and he decided that he wouldn't pick cotton, or cure tobacco. He left home to attend Eastern Carolina and thought he wanted to become a dentist, but the English Department became his muse and when he discovered Milton, it was all over but the shouting. My husband was 17 and Professor Glitterbag was 26 when their Dad died in Raleigh, N.C., and he became the father figure for my husband. It was his older brother who suggested my husband study Russian Lit, History, and Language. I'll send you a PM and see if his name strikes a bell. It's a funny thing, that even though our loved ones are gone, they still influence our lives. Those of us who are left still miss him dearly.
