Can’t we all just be “Peggy”?

This outsourcing/working overseas stuff is a pain in the a$$. I’ve been sending emails to India and calling one person by their last name because some show their last name first and some show their last name last in our email system. Another colleague overseas has chosen an “American” name to use, but his email name is shown as his Indian name; now what the heck do I call him? I just want to get work done, forget about being politically and/or culturally correct and worrying about offending someone by writing an email with the wrong name.

Anyone have a solution to this, or should I just call everyone Peggy?

@Linkat,
I would write a nicely-worded E-mail explaining the confusion and your desire not to offend.

Hopefully, everyone will decide on a standard format.

(Nicknames should be enclosed in quotes. Gupta "Fred" Raneesh)

Failing that, make a cheat sheet that you keep by your desk.

@DrewDad,
You are way too logical.

Fortunately I don't need to converse too much with overseas - I've left that to the underlings. I know it might seem mean, but I am soo busy that trying to be culturally correct is exhausting. I will try to be more careful - I really don't want to offend, but I don't want to waste time either.

@Linkat,
You could address them as Drone 1 and Drone 2 or Worker bee 1 or Worker bee 2 etc... depending on their rank in the hierarchy.

From my past experience with Blockbuster, all their CS reps are named Kevin. And they live in Colorado lol.

@Linkat,
Ah. You have minions to handle it, then.

@DrewDad,
for the most part. I do on occassion have to deal directly with them. I hate to say, but I have little patience when I need to speak directly to them. They are very nice and I do not have anything against them - but with the craziness of the office, trying to be nice, trying to understand the language barrier, etc. is something I have little patience for. Thus pushing to the minions, if at all possible.

It wasn't in my original job description - tough enough to deal with those southerners forget about overseas.

@Linkat,
You do know, don't you, that the more harried you sound, the more you demand quick results, the more slowly the true Southener will move, don't you?

It's damned fine entertainment, and no one provides it quite like the Yankees.

@Setanta,
And as a result they reap lower bonuses.

Now that damn fine entertainment to a boss.

Yeah, unless and until you busted for it. Frankly, i doubt if that is anything you can control.

@Setanta,
Why would you get busted for it? If a person is not meeting expectations by completing their work at a high quality within the deadlines established then they do not deserve a high quality bonus.

@Setanta,
To be quite honest I have not had this situation yet with my reports in the south (except for one). They actually are extremely hard workers that for the most part go beyond my expectations - and quickly I might add.

The one is a troublesome individual and of course he rewards will reflect such.
