I'm very interested. I have a Malaysian visitor here at the office today who speaks English and I'm a bit ashamed to not know any words in her language (despite having lived in Malaysia Embarrassed ).

2 CdK[/u]: You need not be ashamed. English is a global language of international communication, and many people that live in different countries know it. Malaysian is used only in a single country in Asia.
There are several thousand languages that you do not know, and if you feel ashamed for each instance of linguistic ignorance you can develop severe depression... Laughing

So would I! Learning Malaysian and other South-East Asian languages has courted my interest for some time.

Out of interest, how long did you stay in Malaysia, Craven? Was this woman coming into the A2K office- if there is one- or something else?

I'm with you on languages, Craven; languages are what I spend most my time on, and I try to become conversant in the language of wherever I go, and feel quite awkward if I can't. I don't like relying on English; to me, that seems like the easy way out.

BTW, only a form of "English" is spoken in different countries (for steissd)

I speak a little Bahasa Indonesia, which is very similar to Malay......... Most has been forgotten over the years
