Well, since I obviously can't post the pics from that site, here's the link to all the New Brunswick roadside attractions :-)

Yep, thats what aussies call a lobster. The thing in your photo we call a crayfish over here. The thing in my photo is what YOU guys call crayfish over there, (I think). The one Margo posted is what we call a prawn but you call a shrimp. In Australia a shrimp is an unusually small person.
Make sense?

This has got to be the weirdest one in Sydney, but first a bit of background. John Laws is a very well known talkback radio host of the redneck variety. "Cash for comment" was a situation where John Laws was found to be making editorial comments about certain companies with which he had commercial agreements, without disclosing that fact to his audience. Anyway suffice to say EVERYONE in Oz knows his voice.

Islay the talking terrier

It is outside the Queen Victoria Building, behind a statue of the Giant Queen herself. From a distance it looks like a Parisian pissoir, but as you get closer, you realise there is no way to get inside. It's a sandstone circle with a bronze cage on top and a bronze terrier in front. Then a familiar voice booms out: "Hello, my name is Islay. I was once the companion of the great Queen Victoria. Because of the many good deeds I have done for deaf and blind children, I have been given the power of speech."

The notion of a talking dog is not particularly surreal - we see them in cartoons every day. It's the depth and timbre of the voice that sits so oddly with the tiny begging pup. That's because you are hearing The King himself - John Laws. The non-pissoir was erected in 1987 and at the time the major attraction was a stone from the battlements of Blarney Castle embedded in it. A plaque was added in 1988 announcing that Queen Elizabeth had "graciously cast a gold sovereign into the wishing well". Then came a poem by Len Green, which included the line "Her faithful companion of so many years/ She bids him farewell with the shed of her tears" (and you realise the sandstone structure must be that shed).

Then in 1998 came the piece de resistance - John Laws donated his tonsils to give voice to Islay. Sadly, a few months later, he was engulfed in the "cash for comment" scandal and certain cruel observers saw symbolism in the way Islay would bark if you threw a coin in the well.

This here is called "Le Pays de la Sagouine" which is just a few miles from my house. This is set up like the old days where all the actors and actress dress and talk like they did way back when. They put on shows all summer long and it's hysterical. I love this place.

This is a place called "Kings Landing Historical Settlement" in Fredricton, NB.

I've never been there, but is now on my places to go list.

This is the Bouctouche dunes that is right across the bay from us. This is one of my favorite places to go before it gets too crowded in the summer. It got a long beautiful beach and a boardwalk that goes from one end of the dunes all the way to the other end. It's about 4 miles long. It's a very beautiful place.

South of the Border is a motel/restaurant/tourist trap complex. It is located on Route 95, in South Carolina, right over the border from North Carolina (therefore the name) smack dab in the middle of the trip from the northeast US to Florida.
There are billboards announcing how far it is from S.O.B. for over 100 miles either way.

The place takes the concept of "tacky" to new heights (or lows). They have gift shops selling the lowest end doodads. Their one supposedly decent restaurant is not only expensive, but the food is lousy.

It is a large complex, with many buildings. Here is an example of its "ambiance":

This is the home of the last German Emperor, the Hohenzollern Castle. You'll see it when you travel from Stuttgart going south, towards our little city of Balingen. Neat little residence...
