"chatter" "writerly"? I think you might have been looking for 'babble', Set.

[EDIT: 'chattering brook' got some hits, some 3000 of them. 'chattering stream - 1420]

In between rushing and tumbling and babbling and even within those times, mountain streams are indeed limpid.

adjective: clear and bright ("Limpid blue eyes")
adjective: transmitting light; able to be seen through with clarity ("Could see the sand on the bottom of the limpid pool")
