Facing threats of litigation and pressure from Washington, colleges and universities nationwide are opening to white students hundreds of thousands of dollars in fellowships, scholarships and other programs previously created for minorities.

What is the main difference between fellowship and scholarship in this context?

@fansy,
Although in some ways the terms are interchangeble, a fellowship is more particularly a grant for some kind of research; a scholarship, on the other hand is a grant of financial aid in varying amounts made available by private organisations or individuals, government agencies, or the university itself.
