@Zetherin,
Well, now that all sorts of words make up forums - a phenomenon that has taken some getting used to, I admit, but now I like a lot, or will, once Search becomes worked out in the distant future (this is not a nag) - finding stuff can be a deal to figure out. There are already short cuts, but this kind of navigation will improve.

You folks have been dearly missing your missed posts/categories. Some of us have trouble finding out what gem we said at some length and effort about a certain arguable consideration some eight years ago (say on a zillion post politics thread).

We once had a great search function, but Robert has explained why that doesn't work at this level of data. He/they will work on it over time, probably a lot of time.

Meantime, some don't know how to use what we have here already, re the google custom search, and searching tags.

What I would recommend has to do with what subjects I am drawn to (many).
Tell me some of yours (or I should look at your profile). I should probably add to my own profile, it's a tad on the simple side.
Izzie

Yes, me too, I read your posts that I run across, Zeth. Well, this will change as I'll run across less, and not be a philforumer (is that two m's?), in a kind of privacy and rules of discourse respect.

I hope there is continued exchange on the regular wild and woolly board.

Oh, yeah, I'll still be around. I'm thinking about dipping my feet into some of the other sub-forums, like Health and Relationships. Any suggestions on some of the sub-forums that are worthwhile here?

well, that's a good sign - you'll get to know the locals.... hey, we're a motley crew - a little quirky - but some uber decent folk round hereabouts and heaps of forums to choose from - ENJOY mate Very Happy

Hey robert;

Will the old groups and old blogs be going up with this new handsome classic forum when it arrives?
Or have they now finally been accepted as surplus to requirements?
(NOT a condemnation)

Thanks you kindly as kindly thanks you.

(and i know it not relevant to this so don't expect an answer, just hope for one, but also about my old PF PMs?)

When we first made the change to this whole new thing about tagging, a few or several people tagged a lot of threads pre-change. Me, I tagged art and photography, food and drink, and my own, which was sometimes architecture or land use threads. Also some travel threads, and some others, like original writing. So did others tag lots of threads, not naming names or categories. But there is still a lot of old stuff lolling about.

If you now look at my tags, much of my accumulation is from trying to tag other people's threads.

I admit I tagged all the western breakfast threads 'western breakfast'; it was a jaded/bizarre/piquant/sympathetic choice. Still, I'm guessing some good threads go un-tagged.

This whole data base has some gaps re tags.

What I don't know, is if some of us earlier folk should go back and do that re (their) own threads.

Some pre 2008 threads had depth, or if not depth, interest.

Oh good. I'm glad you'll still be around, Zetherin.
And I'm hoping that even more philosophy forum folk will become involved in some of the non-specialist philosophy threads here, too. Makes the discussions much more interesting!

@ossobuco,
Tagging art and photography, food and drink, architecture or land use threads and also some travel threads, and original writing does show a commendable ambition to self-improvement I must admit.

I had never heard of the word "atavistic" until now. Thank you for teaching me a new word today.

I have a habit of calling the overarching site, the forum, and the individual sections, sub-forums. Though it really doesn't apply here since the "forums" are simply tag condensations.

For instance, I would usually call the entire philosophyforum.com site, a forum. And when I spoke of, say, the metaphysics section on the site, I would refer to it as the metaphysics sub-forum. I suppose I just wanted to indicate that there was an overarching board, and this was just a section of said overarching board.

Well, despite what everyone says about spendius, his command of the
English language is impeccable and he does use terms that are not too common.

@Zetherin,
I don't operate out of forums, or sub-forums as the case may be. I usually start with "new posts," see what's cooking, then go to "my posts" to catch up on anything I may have missed from threads I have participated in.

If I've been gone for a while, I may check out the "popular" stuff. (If I haven't been gone for a while, I likely would have already caught it via "new posts.")

Sometimes I throw in "new topics" too in case there has been a topic that hasn't had a lot of responses but is interesting.

There is so much variety -- some great stuff in weird forums, and interesting forums (subject-wise) overcome by acrimony or pablum -- that it's hard for me to single out any to suggest. I do often find parenting + childcare stuff interesting, but that's my own bias (if you're not a parent, it's probably less interesting).

If I'm looking for something just generally to get me thinking or get into a discussion or make me laugh, "new posts"/ "new topics" tends to work best.

One would think that there is room for participation in all the A2K discussions that cover a very wide range of subjects and interests, and in addition have specialised Group Forums which are focused on limited and specialised topics and subjects. Philosophy is just such a topic, with a tradition going back several thousands of years, but once many of the kinks are ironed out with the Philforum Group, there may be other subjects for which special communities are useful and appropriate.

I don't think the idea is to build silos, with A2Kers in one and Pfers in another---there was regrettably some of that when we first merged--- but rather to allow specialised communities to exist within the general forum community, and to define for themselves how best to proceed.

Surely by now, we have transcended thinking that being different is somehow being either better or worse; being different is just--- being different.
