“Man, Know Thyself”
Over the Gates of the ancient Temples of the Mysteries was written this injunction, “Man, Know Thyself”. It meant that each Candidate must try to contact that Inner Self which is the only Reality, and only by doing so, will learn to know his Creator.

@RexRed,
Quote:
My father was a Shriner and it rubbed a little off on me. The number one stipulation and most foundational ideal of the Shriner's is basic deism. In this I fall short because I am an agnostic, I don't discount God or the Masons neither do I fully embrace them. Religion intrigues me but I know my boundaries fairly well. Let's says I support religious expression and even participate in it at times but no single religion really has me fully convinced. I kind of like being open and impartial to them all. You can serve many masters.

It does not seem to me that you have a master but rather you are trying to understand reality the best that you can.

Rex I think that you may find value in this and if not I would like to know why?

@reasoning logic,
I am really glad you posted this RL. I had heard some of the speeches before. I agree with about 90% of what is said here. I do seem to sense a few militant vibes from some of the speakers. For that reason alone I do not fully endorse the atheist movement. I do not believe in the Abrahamic Gods (Judaism Christianity Islam) but I do not discredit a creator... we are here aren't we, something created us. Maybe not an all knowing God... I think uncertainty is the way and atheists seem as certain as the radical religious zealots they abhor. This blind "certainty" is simply the wrong way to go about it. Atheists have simply replaced one certainty with another.

Why shouldn't a God ask these same questions about himself? "that is if he truly exist. "He is here and something had to create him"

There could have been but I did not sense them.

I have never met an educated atheist that claimed that there was no God but rather they say they seen no evidences that would suggest there was a God.
They do not claim with certainty that there is not one and if you know of an educated atheist that claims with certainty that there is no God would you kindly bring him to my attention?

If we were to ask theists if there could be a possibility of there being no God, I bet that it may be a lower number who would confess such a statement.

@reasoning logic,
Thankfully most people who claim to be believers are mainly and essentially agnostics...they kind of hope there is a God, as the idea is appealing specially in troubled times but I honestly doubt most believe in God all the time...they sort of go back and forward on that matter.

The business of believing, as most things in life, is hardly static...

I would love to see the studies that prove this to be true.

@reasoning logic,
I reason common sense would teach you so...unless your personal experience there in the states tell you otherwise...but then again your society is very used to polarized debates...here in Europe things are thankfully different...

I thought that you had a good reason for what you said. I live in what is called the bible belt in the US. I think it should be an interest of national security or better "world security" for all nations to study how those in our bible belt believe.

I do not put all of the blame on extremist Islamic terrorists.

@reasoning logic,
.., I may be wrong but it seams like you guys are a tad to territorial about almost any ground/subject n that of course when ingrained in culture over time ends up bringing up extreme positions on both conflicting sides which in turn are perceived by each other as defensive responses against an attack on your way of life thinking and being...ad you folks ignored those guys and probably their position would be far less harmful...it seams like believing to much on education can have unintended consequences...
