You Know that You Are Getting Older When..................

I had a best friend in high school. We had a falling out in our twenties, and had only a few brief contacts with one another since. We have not seen each other in decades.

One day, I thought that I would look her up on Facebook, and, there she was. I asked her to be my "friend", and she accepted. We had not yet written to one another.

Today, I see that she posted a very large picture. She looks like a very well kept old lady. I was shocked. I quickly took a look at my avatar, called my husband in, and demanded to know if I looked younger than her.

Every once in awhile things happen that makes one realize the passage of time.

Anybody have any stories about when you realized that you were not a kid anymore?

@Phoenix32890,
Nothing has smacked the passage of time into my face like Facebook. Who are all those old people with gray hair, pot bellies and grown children? Please don't tell me I'm one of them.

Most of my employees are half my age, but technically grown-ups. They all look like kids to me. None of them remember life without computers and none of them have ever seen a rotary phone.

@Green Witch,
I just rented the 45th anniversary of the film, Dr. Zhivago. I realized, with a jolt, that many people on A2K and Facebook were not alive when I first saw that film.

I don't see my half siblings that often. Each time we meet, I am shocked that they are old, when in my mind they still are practically kids. They did most of their growing up after I left home. I believe my perception of them has been greatly altered by this.

I was sitting in the waiting area of the hospital, waiting to see a doctor. I looked around. I was clearly older than everyone else waiting. I was also older than the doctor. This was a jolt.

@Roberta,
My eye doctor is 35. I picked him after my other eye doctor retired partly because I want him to be around when I'm really old and will need him the most.

I was 4 when the film Dr. Zhivago came out.

I remember seeing Dr. Zhivago on a date with the guy who had been valedictorian at my high school.

I remember the first two times I felt old.

When I was growing up, the dentist was an age peer of my parents. After I married and moved to New England, I was in the middle of a dental exam when the dentist said something about, "people our age." I immediately looked at his diplomas: he was a senior when I was a freshman. Now the dentist was my age peer.

Some time later, I was on the subway. The person opposite me was reading a magazine whose cover story was about Bob Dylan. I used to hear about Dylan's doings as gossip from friends . . . that Dylan had screwed Detroit's most avid groupie while her husband was asleep in the next room . . . now, I had to find about Dylan through magazines which meant that I was no longer hip. Dylan probably wasn't hip any longer but he was still Dylan.

Phoenix, There have been several things that has made me realize that I'm getting older than sin... In May of this year, a childhood friend (same age) died from a heart attack. When I attended his funeral in Sacramento, I saw all his siblings, and they all looked old! Another thing that reminds me of my age is the simple fact that in my recent travels, I've begun to tire earlier in the day. When I was "younger," I could go all day long and still have energy left over...but not any more.

@CalamityJane,
My mother once mentioned to my then 7 year old niece that she didn't have television growing up in the 1930's-40's. My niece got all wide-eyed and asked her: "But what did you watch??".

@Phoenix32890,
My boss is 23.

I was driving him and his gf last night and we got to not talking about work. She asked me how long RP and I've been together. Well, we met on 12/17/88.

My boss was born in March of 1987.

I havn´t grown old at all over the last decades, but things have changed.

I am sure the street has been made longer. It used to take me 5 minutes to walk down to the busstop at the end of the street now it takes me 10 minutes.

Now I only buy light milk and youghurt, but it is much heavier to carry home than normal milk and youghurt even it is called light. I better stop buying it.

Books are not the quality they used to be, now they are printed with small and blurry letters.

People have become so impolite, they whisper instead of talking normally so I can hardly hear what they are saying.

Many have become more polite. Now someone will help me with my suitcase which did not happen a few decades ago.

In the last six months or so, I have been finding the same thing. People not only hold doors for me, but when I am not yet near the door, but heading towards it, they will wait for me to go through it.

I have a picture on the wall of me and my husband that we took on a cruise about 10 years ago. If I didn't "know" those people, I would not recognize them! Sad

@Phoenix32890,
We had a 50 year school reunion and I reconized everybody.
Our teacher who was around 85 came alert, walking with a straight back and high heals.
Everybody had matured over the years, but certainly looked very much as they did as young. Everyone was leading an active life. One even had made a driver´s licence not so long ago as she was taking care of her old mother.
One has a farm and is giving courses in different things. Some of us have two houses to take care of. One of them being a summerhouse with a large property.
I am a free lancer and travelling a lot because of that.

There is a rock 'n' roll joke:

A man comes home from work and greets his family. His son then remarks, "Dad, did you know that Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?"
