Also of great interest is the apple fly maggot, which mimics (backwards) the jumping spider, which upon encountering an apple maggot fly, thinks it's seeing another jumping spider and either displays a territorial display (toward a male) or gives a courtship dance (toward a female). Meanwhile the fly makes its escape.

A giant female wood spider seen at Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat district, Assam, India. Scientifically known as Nephila pilipes it is a species of golden orb-web spider. It is commonly found in primary and secondary forests and gardens. Females are large and grow to a body size of 30 to 50 mm (overall size up to 20 cm), with males growing to 5 to 6 mm. It is one of the biggest spiders in the world.

@vonny,
Some of them do! They make little sails out of their silk and let the wind carry them around. Shocked

@vonny,
Laughing I'd like to catch them with my camera lens, but that's about it. I'd rather they go on their merry way.

@FBM,
Wonderful picture - but scary. How close to it did you have to be to take the photo?

@vonny,
I was using a 70mm macro lens, so pretty close. Lying on my belly in the grass on campus like a bloomin' idjit. No telling what kind of a reputation I have around school... Confused

Here's an American version, Nephila clavipes, quite common in Florida, the golden orb weaver.

If you had 8' tall insects, you might come to appreciate them.
