Remembering childhood memories and fears.

DADDY LONG LEGS
By BumbleBeeBoogie

In my tiny bedroom, hardly wider
than a closet four by eight,
a spindly Daddy Long Legs spider
keeps her nightly nocturnal date.

My window's narrow shaft of light
slams against the wall each dawn
as the hated creature of the night
scurries back to her haven calm.

But surely as dark comes creeping
and silence spreads across my bed
Daddy Long Legs will be leaping
and dancing o'er my sleeping head.

I know that shy lady arachnids,
with their delicate silhouettes,
are harmless ballerina kids
doing dainty spider pirouettes.

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
Someone incorrectly tagged this 'spiders". Daddy Long Legs are not spiders, they are mites. You will have to tweak your poem,BBB.

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
Well, well, I won't change my poem but I will remember it for the future if I run into another "mite".

Apparently there is a debate whether the Daddy Long Leg is a spider:

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
This is a Daddy Long Legs - Harvestman (a type of mite)

This is a Daddy Long Legs - Cellar Spider, Pholcidae (a type of spider)

There is no debate about the classification of either animal. The debate occurs because the name "Daddy Long Legs" is used with both animals, even though they are different. The name Daddy Long Legs is apparently also used for Crane Flies, although I've never heard anyone call a Crane Fly that.

Could be both are arachnids, but then, so are scorpeons, and no one is calling them spiders...I guess I just don't know...
