im sorry this isnt a great picture. Their webs flap in the wind too much for a good close up.
it has a shell on it that makes it look like a crab.
the ones i see tend to be yellow/black.
Maybe about the size of a penny ... very hard shell..
they tend to cover my cactus plant and dont seem to live anywhere else
in my yard...

any ideas?

You KNOW I HATE spiders!

But did I click on this anyway? Huh?

Why did I do that?

Ooooh! That's kinda cool. Never heard of a spider with a shell. Did you tap on it?

I was gonna try to find some info for you, shewolf, but just googling "black yellow spider shell" gave me the willies.

I thought garden spiders were known for their elaborate, exact webs. Vern's looks rather messy.

It could be a crab-like orb weaver. Check the pic here:

Oh, that looks like it. Google "Gasteracantha" and you'll get lots of info. Looks like he's supposed to be in Florida.

Oh no roger.. he is REALLY cool!
It looks like a mini crab.
And yes, when I googled a description of the spider, I got no where but scared..grossed out.. :shudder: just EW.
Strange that I am creeped out by most spiders, yet this crab spider has me pickning him up, touching him, photographing him, ,,

Instigate.. that IS IT!
that is exactly the spider I see.
They are everywhere and just so neat!
They DO spin very sloppy webs. I think , well, from what I see actually.. they do thier hunting ON plants. Their webs dont seem to do much for food catching.

it is the coolest spider I think I have ever seen.
It isnt a spider ..but it is.
they are very slow, their legs are short so you dont typically see them from the top of the shell.. and have beautiful colors..
I like them.
Alot~

yeah.
it isnt scary it all. It is just a really cool insect.
Strange.. but there is nothing creepy about it.
It looks like a walking pebble.. until you get up to it
but nothing at all creepy.

Is this spider Vern or Princess.

Roger has missed Princess for a long, long time. There have been rumors that she stole a ton of money and escaped to Mexico. Roger, if this is Princess, at least you should be comforted by the fact that she has a good home with some very cool people. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the shewolfnm's will help her escape if the Feds catch up with her there in Austin.

I recall the time Chuck Jensen, from up the road, came down to visit me and as he was walking up the driveway a giant spider jumped out of the tree and landed on his chest. Chuck let out a scream and I told him to hold on while I grabbed my camera.

"Hurry up, Gus! This damn thing is crawling toward my head!"

I got back outside just as Chuck was peeling the spider from his chest. I snapped the picture....

Chuck threw the spider on the ground and my ol' hound dog scampered over and ate it in a matter of seconds.

The dog looked up at me and one of the spider's legs was sticking out of the corner of his mouth. It looked funny as hell, the dog staring at us with that spider leg still twitching. Finally the dog's tongue snared the leg and with a swift gulp it was gone.

Chuck and I went into the house and had a beer.
