After all of the hullabaloo, who here still thinks soccer/futbol is an absolute bore?

@tsarstepan,
Using the correct word for this most important sport has nothing to do with "accommodate others" but is a bloody duty.

More bad news from the World Cup in Qatar.
European team captains at the World Cup won't wear armbands promoting diversity
Quote:
DOHA, Qatar — A World Cup already filled with controversy added a bit more on Monday.

Seven European national soccer teams - including England, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Wales - announced their team captains would not wear armbands promoting diversity because they feared on-field punishments by tournament organizers during the 2022 World Cup.

The teams planned for their captains to wear rainbow armbands with the words "OneLove" to promote LGBTQ rights. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.

Now, the European countries have decided against it, saying FIFA, soccer's international governing body, threatened the captains with yellow cards. That increases the risk of being ejected from a match or prevented playing in a later game if they accumulate a second yellow card in the opening group stage.

@tsarstepan,
The controversy surrounding the One Love armband is tragic.
It’s also emblematic of everything that this World Cup is not: diversity, tolerance and freedom of opinion.

@Walter Hinteler,
Russia had similar problems when awarded the Cup in the same corrupt deal.

Russia had cheap booze.

Qatar has none of that, when a culture minister was interviewed he was talking about art galleries and museums, not what most sports fans are looking for.

Qatar's reputation after this World Cup will be worse, the fans will be talking about the awful time they had and the focus will be on migrant deaths and lack of LGBTQ and women's rights.

Not trying to completely digress from the subject but wondering how many nudes (female in particular) are in these so called Qatar art galleries and museums. Safe to say, they're not pushing any boundaries in that arena as well.

@tsarstepan,
Not just nudes, strict Islamic art only allows abstract designs because anything else is putting yourself on a level with the creator.

Yeah. I forgotten about the no human figures in art part of the strict Islamic faith.

@tsarstepan,
I wonder how much is home grown and not bought with oil wealth.

Although they do seem to have put up a few public art installations in the run up to the World Cup.

At the opening match of the German national football team against Japan, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser wore the "One Love" armband banned by Fifa on the pitch.
Previously, the national players had covered their mouths during the team photo, protesting against the ban.

JAPAN BEATS GERMANY 2-1!

The bigger upset, though, is Saudi Arabia over Argentina 2-1.

I find it kind of ironic that this 12 year old antifootball thread has become the most active sports thread for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (instead of someone opening a new thread altogether). What a weird digital world we live in. Is this what Meta's Metaverse going to look like in a few years?

If only I could monetize the activity in this thread to make it worth the pain that is the World Cup. Facebook is flooded with the daily scores.

@tsarstepan,
Football is the beautiful game. The number one sport in the World.

And only one side has scored 6 goals.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, referees are adding extra time to games. Lots of it.
Quote:
"Imagine in a half there are two, three goals scored. So it's easy to lose three, four, five minutes, only for a goal celebration. This time has to be considered and compensated at the end."

Sounds pretty arbitrary and stupid to me.

@izzythepush,
Do you think the Catholics launched the crusades because the Muslims dissed their swag?
