@tsarstepan,
We don't enjoy use of the s word.

It pisses us off far more than any football match would piss you off.

It's the Women's Euros at the moment, we smashed NI at St Mary's, my local stadium, and next we're up against Spain in the Quarter Finals.

En-Ger-Land! En-Ger-Land!

More Than 100 Dead in Unrest After Indonesian Soccer Match
Quote:
More than 100 people died Saturday night after a professional soccer match in Malang, Indonesia, when rioting fans prompted the police to fire tear gas into tightly packed crowds, according to local officials.

After the Arema football club lost 3-2 to Persebaya Surabaya, dozens of fans rushed the field at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Arema’s home.

The unrest prompted the police to fire tear gas, which caused panic, Inspector General Nico Afinta, the East Java Police chief, said at a news conference. He said 127 people died, two of them members of the National Police.

@tsarstepan,
Worldwide, the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster in the UK is considered one of the most devastating, when 97 Liverpool FC fans were killed when the stands collapsed. In 2012, 74 people died in stadium riots after a football match in Port Said, Egypt. In 1964, 320 people were killed and more than 1000 injured in a mass panic during an Olympic qualifying match between Peru and Argentina at Lima's national stadium.

@tsarstepan,
There's a film starring Gary Oldman called The Firm where he plays a seemingly respectable Estate Agent who leads a vicious London gang of hooligans on match days.

At one point on of the characters says football is an excuse, if it wasn't football it would be something else. It's all about the violence.

That's certainly true over here. It all kicked off in Leicester after an India Pakistan cricket match.

The situation has been stirred up with disinformation on social media and groups of Hindus and Muslims have been travelling to Leicester for a massive scrap.

Last night seemed to be the first Saturday night that passed peacefully for a long time.

the death toll is up to 174...

Quote:
Disappointed after their team's loss, thousands of supporters of Arema, known as "Aremania," reacted by throwing bottles and other objects at players and soccer officials. Fans flooded the Kanjuruhan stadium pitch in protest and demanded that Arema management explain why, after 23 years of undefeated home games, this match ended in a loss, witnesses said.

The rioting spread outside the stadium where at least five police vehicles were toppled and set ablaze amid the chaos. Riot police responded by firing tear gas, including toward the stadium's stands, causing panic among the crowd. Tear gas is banned at soccer stadiums by FIFA.

Some suffocated and others were trampled as hundreds of people ran to the exit in an effort to avoid the tear gas. In the chaos, 34 died at the stadium, including two officers, and some reports include children among the casualties.

@tsarstepan,
World Cup 2022: Awarding Qatar the tournament was a mistake, says former Fifa president Sepp Blatter
Quote:
Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter says the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a "mistake".

Blatter, 86, was president of world football's governing body when Qatar was awarded the tournament in 2010.

The Gulf state has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, human rights record and treatment of migrant workers.

Qatar World Cup ambassador Khalid Salman has said that homosexuality is "damage in the mind".

The former Qatar international told German broadcaster ZDF that LGBTQ+ people attending the tournament should "accept our rules".

There is concern about how LGBTQ+ people are treated in Qatar, where same-sex relationships and the promotion of same-sex relationships are criminalised, with punishments ranging from fines to the death sentence.

Blatter said Qatar is "too small of a country" to host the tournament.

"Football and the World Cup are too big for it," he told Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger.

The Qatar World Cup, the first to be hosted in the Middle East in the tournament's 92-year-history and the first during the Northern Hemisphere winter, takes place from 20 November to 18 December.

@tsarstepan,
Our women's team are taking a stand against it.

Unlike the male game where gay players have only just started to come out lesbians were prominent from the beginning.

Did anyone notice that the German women celebrated a victory against the world champions from the USA, the first home defeat for the Americans in more than five years?
The last German victory against the USA in a friendly match was 16 years ago, and in a World Cup match 19 years ago.

@tsarstepan,
This is front page news over here, not to mention the Fifa president's meltdown of a press briefing.

There's all sorts of **** going down, the treatment, and deaths, of migrant workers, LGBT and women's rights, Iran being allowed to play, (in the same group as England Wales and the USA,) and the regime reneging last minute about the price and availability of alcohol.

As it is, it's the shittiest of all "beers" non Czech budweiser they'll be paying through the nose for in select venues only.

The World Cup is supposed to showcase a nation, raise it's profile, do it some good.

That's what happened when Germany won it, people came away thinking better of Germany. It's international image and approval shot up.

This World Cup, and the last are mired in controversy, corruption and the fall of Sepp Blatter.
