What was the status of Knighthood during the era of the protectorate?

After the English civil war, when Cromwell took control, where people still knighted, Was anyone knighted as a reward for helping him reach power? Or did he do away with knighting and the tittle of "Sir" fearing they where to closely associated with the former monarchy? If so was there a comparable tittle used?
