Md. first-grader brings two loaded guns to class - On Deadline - USATODAY.com
A first-grader brought two loaded handguns to school yesterday in Maryland because he thought they were toys, according to a story on the front page of The (Baltimore) Sun.
Police say the 7-year-old found the weapons while visiting his uncle last week in Baltimore .
"They were in his book bag and he completely forgot about them. He didn't realize it until he got to school," Michael Hill, a Baltimore County police spokesman, tells the paper. "He thought they were toys anyway. He put one in his pocket and went to class."
A teacher discovered the 9 mm Kahr pistol when it fell on the floor. A search of the boy's locker turned up a .40-caliber Glock handgun.
Both weapons were loaded, with a round in each chamber, according to the paper.
The student, who hasn't been publicly identified, was suspended but won't face criminal charges.
"We don't see any criminal behavior on the part of the child," Bill Toohey, another police spokesman, tells the paper. "Why do 7-year-olds do anything?"
