I think we hit 64. That's nice, after waiting so long for even a breath of cool air.

It usually starts raining about now, but we are in a prolonged drought, after getting a daily rain much of last year.

Our big concern just now is how to put up a tree, having a big dog that likes to chew up everything. We are going to try it. I pity the poor tree. We won't be dumb enough to put any presents under it.

This is the first I've seen of this thread. I haven't read through it, but I agree with Edgar's first post.

This holiday season, t-g-day through new years, is important to me. I am filled with hope and love for humankind through most of it. Unfortunately I tend to get pretty damned depressed about my own personal life a couple weeks-days before xmas. It's a weird dichotomy.

I'm sorry to learn that littlek. I have an optimism that grows stronger throught the season, then gradually abates in the weeks to follow.

Well, Edgar, I imagine that's because you've made a happy life for yourself. It's great that you are content.

I have some severe problems, such as old age security and long range health concerns, but, aside from that, I indeed am content.

Well, I was set to have a quiet holiday alone with Mrs. edgarblythe, but now she and my kids have decreed that the turkey we will bake should go to Becky's home. We are to all put our food together and have a feast. I don't mind. At least I get to see the ones that don't get by here that often.

Edgar, I have always maintained that holidays are about family, and generosity, rather than some spooky religion.

I love this season -- and if it happens to coincide with some religious celebrations going on at the same time -- I overlook them.

On my limited time and resources, Walmart is the most viable option. We manage to make 'em all happy.

I believe that people have exploited Christmastide to an awful extent. Honestly, the season- whether you be Christian, Hindu, Atheist or anything else- should be about goodwill.

Here's a confession. My wife and I do not participate in the Xmas frenzy. We only give gifts to small children. We have stopped sending cards. And we put up minimal decorations, just for the ambience. The result is that during the Xmas season we suffer no stress at all, and we feel no guilt or shame at all. We see most people, like Edgar's brother-in-law, as falling into the trap of a commercial system designed to drain his bank account and flood his body with corticol. I think we talked about the benefits of grinchism last year. Twisted Evil

edgarblythe wrote:
This year will be much different, as my wife and I may spend the day alone. Not that I mind. I can't think of a better person to be alone with.

Many wise things have been said in this thread.

I'm not a big celebrator of Christmas, but I always enjoy Vivienne's special dinners, as they are excellent. The family time is the best part of Christmas.

The rest of the hub bub that happens around the season.....hmmm... Rolling Eyes

It's a time to be festive in anotherwise dismal time of year. A time for family. It's a time for reflection on the positive aspects of our lives. A time to promote Peace and Good Will. How anybody could be oblivious to the best aspects of the holiday season is beyond me.

edgar, We all understand about PEACE to the WORLD, and all that, but this administration ruined it for the whole world. The most powerfuil man living on this planet had to be responsible for the mess we're in today. His legacy will be the reward of history as the worst leader of the modern world.

Yes, I deny all possibility that there may be gods or God. Yet, the season is sacred to me. It harbors nostalgia for the past, when I felt a bit of special favor for and from people around me. An island of humanity in an otherwise too cruel world.
Then, there is my belief that humanity must have tradition to reenforce our best values. There is much to be gained from a day in which we take stock of ourselves for the past year, whatever our inclination regarding religion. The notion of Peace On Earth, Good Will To Men is universal in its scope and should be embraced by all. In my humble estimation, "A Christmas Carol" is the greatest story any person has written.
And, so, as we approach these days, this atheist at least wishes you one and all:
Happy Thanksgiving! and: Merry Christmas!

Same to you Edgar. I love your postive way of thinking Exclamation Have fun with your loved ones, and eat a lot. Smile

I've been invited to spend Thanksgiving with my dear friends, Gretchen and Norm. Norm is a retired Congregationalist minister. They love me even if I'm an atheist.

Yep, I should see all my grandkids and all my children, except for one of each. I've been so buried in work, the big day slipped up on me. Seems like it should still be October or something.

The turkey's in the oven. Looks like it will be succulently, mouth wateringly ready at about ten o'clock.
