No to those answers:

CLUE:

As an actress you could say she's undomesticated and the movie is off the beaten track.

Well, well. Lots of guesses and all wrong. Hmmm...

CLUE # 2:

Cigarette-puffing femme fatale in Hollywood B movies of the 40's and 50's in the only film that most would even remember.

The film is in Ebert's best 100 films.

"Detour" (1945) with Ann Savage (working solely off Lightwizard's hints: I've never seen the movie).

joe, you sly fox -- I didn't know you had it in you!

(I must say it would take an attorney or perhaps an investigator who would pick up on the title solely from the hints.)

Your turn to pick and image -- incidentally, because IMDb images do not post, one can use the GOOGLE Image serch which works fantastic. I haven't tried www.tinyurl.com again to see if it will work to disguise the address.

Well, I went to Roger Ebert's Greatest Films website and looked for films titles that looked like they could be "off the beaten path." Then I confirmed my hunch by checking the "Detour" listing on IMDb, where I found Ann Savage (i.e. undomesticated) as one of the leads. "Bingo," sez I, "that's gotta' be it!"

I don't know if that qualifies me as a Hercule Poirot -- I'm usually more of an Inspector Clouseau when it comes to tracking down clues.

And, btw, I'd never even heard of this film before, but now I'll be on the lookout for it when I'm in the mood to rent a film noir. Thanks, LW!

I hope this is a challenge to all the cinephiles out there.

Lightwizard: Well, obviously that wasn't as much of a challenge as I thought it would be. "Grand Hotel" is correct (that's the dashing John Barrymore and the ravishingly beautiful Joan Crawford in the picture). Your turn.
