G. Gordon Libby, et al? Yeah, they're nutcases!

Liberals are the agents of change. They make the world move forward.
Conservatives are the resistors of change, who protect the existing institutions.

Somewhere inbetween is the answer. Or rather, in concert is the answer.
Yin and yang.

Some institutions should be protected and upheld, some should be shed and
left behind. Some things should change, some changes aren't thought through
and cause problems. Some change shouldn't happen too quickly.

"It takes only 20 years for a liberal to become a conservative, without changing
a single opinion."

"It's not that liberals aren't always right, it's that they're always right too
soon."

I have some liberal views and some pretty conservative views. I'm a fan
of some liberal thinkers and some conservative thinkers.

I consider myself a "liberal" just because I reserve the right to change my
mind whenever I feel like it. That's the true meaning of the word, and why
that first quote above is often the case for the zealots. The liberal agenda
of 30 years ago either worked and is done or in some cases didn't work and
needs to be tossed out. By all means look to history, I believe we
encounter the same basic problems in a new context repeatedly, and learn
from it. On the other hand, don't be bound to past solutions if they didn't
get results.

In reality, we all have to much to work together to get done to spend time
bickering over the dumb stuff.

Let's all concentrate on being "effective" independents.

@Sherman cv,
I have to agree that being an effective independent might be better than staying Republican or Democrat just because one has always been one of those parties , but the problem is that independents have the deck stacked against them all the time . They have no voice today , and the current parties do their best to keep them down , witness the treatment of Lieberman .
One only has to compare and contrast positions taken by Democrats like JFK to see that they were not at all like the Democrats of today . JFK might well have been booted out by his party if he espoused some of his agenda today . Strong on defense , anti-abortion , etc .

@Curmudgeon,
Independents don't have an organized political voice but they do have the power to influence an election.:cool:

@Drnaline,
"I don't belong to an organized political party. I'm a democrat!"

There are strong on defense/anti-abortion democrats. Where I live the
Democrats (Dixiecrats) are more conservative than the Republicans,
who are the reformers (and get my support when they have better ideas) in most
cases. It is relative. Lieberman hasn't been very nice over the years to the
Dems in his district... taken them smuggly for granted. He's really catching
heat for being "too Washington," which happens to a lot of people regardless
of party. He didn't discuss his constituent's viewpoints with them, just rolled
his eyes and dismissed them. People don't like that, and when they can do
something about it they do. He is the epitome of a lobbyist friendly insider.

The Dems are, by definition, a coalition party. Their agenda is defined by
what people bring to the table. I've also waited for the Greens and
Libertarians to bring their agendas to the Dems and get something done.
Temporary coalitions... like the Religious Right and the Reps, only honest:D

How's the Christian Social Science coming? When did Jesus cover divisiveness?

Funny, most here do not confuss the two? By productive, would you mean people converting your way? Is that the only way to be productive in your eyes?
