Bobby Kennedy supported doing away with educational deferments to the
draft in the late '60s. The reason? Fairness, and the fact that the people
who were supporting the war in Vietnam weren't the ones being forced to go
fight it.

Rangel's trying to make a similar point. He's not doing a great job of it, and
the conditions are different... not the same scenario.

Alll I will say is any non-american person who joins the military should be
made a citizen instantly. If you're willing to fight for this country that's good
enough for me.

If that were so today we would have a prodominantly hispanic military who's loyalty may not be with us in mind. I imagine the recent immigration demontrations but with guns.

...and you're hispanic, right?

I have never found hispanics to be any more disloyal to America than any other ethnic group.

There are jewish Americans who are certainly concerned with the well-being of Israel, yet are loyal Americans.

Same with any group of -Americans... cuban-americans, irish-americans, croat-americans, etc.

I find your statement incredibly puzzling. The benefit of getting further along on the road to American citizenship is one of the primary reasons non-americans join the military.

If you suggest their motives are selfish, you really need to take stock of the motives of people in general, here and elsewhere.

The mestizo-hispanics were in the southwest before the United States was... borders and boudries are drawn by men, not divine forces. The Mexicans who liken their situation to those caught on the other side of the Berlin Wall might have a valid arguement.

Still, we have to have a coherent, beneficial immigration policy. A wall with a gate. I still think those willing to put their lives on the line should be invited in.

Did those jews arrive hear legally?

Did all of them arrive here legally?

That doesn't surprise me, being as you think others should receive preferential treatment for various reasons. This is no different.
So you think those that join our military should be automatically put first in line for citizenship?

"The benefit of getting further along" And "If you suggest their motives are selfish," Don't these two statements contradict each other?

Yes i know, my family came over in 1678.

Key word, "might."

Invited or not the first step should be to get here legally. If the first act you perpetrate when you arrive here is to commit a crime, even if you join our military. IMO you deserve no special privelidge. Those that i know that arrived here legally and joined the guard are perfectly willing to still go through the motions of immigration. They do hope there service will inhance there application but expect nothing.
My point is, if your statement were so and it was automatic IMO a good percentage of the 12 million illegals here now would take you up on your offer. As well as other's on the other side to come on over.

@Drnaline,
I was pointing out that I think that people are selfish, in general, most of the time.

No, I don't live where you do... New Mexico, right?

I live an hour outside of New Orleans, which now has a big, new Central and
South American population, because the government allowed workers to be
brought in after the hurricane and suspended any kind of legalized citizen
concerns. Contractors I know have had to reluctantly hire them (and learn
some Spanish on the fly), and say they want to stay and become citizens.
It's causing problems on one-hand because of obvious reasons, and on the
other hand they are working their asses off and are so overjoyed at having
opportunity and a chance to live the American Dream. No one knows what to
think, or to expect in the future.

I think non-legalized citizen troops (and their families) are usually granted
citizenship if they die in the line of duty. I still think if they serve in combat
they've earned it... I know of ways that wealthy people can invest and hurry
their legalization. I know your opinion is to cut out any favoritism, but this is
capitalism, I don't believe that will ever happen.

If you don't favor yourself, who's gonna do it for you. I agree.

The government didn't allow them. They new there would be work and came by the droves.

And we know there willing to proceed illegally. That goes for the Contractor as well as the illegal employee.

Yup, welcome to your new welfare state which probably outnumbers your old welfare state. Bein Venidos.
They work there asses of at taking American jobs at a lower rate then most Americans would not work that hard for. IMO there is not a shortage of help, there is a shortage of contractors willing to pay an American what he is worth. There over joyed at there chance because there government is repressive.

I think non-legalized citizen troops should not be allowed to join.

I'll agree with you on one point. That is if they arrived here legal in the first place.
