Ok, we don't ever usually do this but: DO NOT POST TO THIS THREAD. All posts will be deleted.

This is not a discussion, this is a ballot. We are going to use this thread as a way to gather feedback on development that is already planned, not to decide or discuss what should be developed. If you have something to say go to our friendly companion topic where all the discussion can be held.

Vote for the projects you are most interested in and add your say to what we develop next. If a project's details are not sufficiently described for you, wait on voting for that item, as we will edit in specifics as time permits and as the specs have been codified.

Note: We will not necessarily do the projects in voting order. Sometimes a project may depend on another, and not all projects are equal in difficulty or technical urgency. But we will use this to collect user feedback and prioritize where we can.

Prevent "graffiti" tags.

We have term extraction algorithms available to lower the relevance weight of the "graffiti" tags, which will reduce use of the tags that are not relevant to the topic.

Edit: also included is a fix to related tags, where right now one single user can disproportionately influence them (should count unique users for the relevancy calculation).

Improve Private Messages

The private message feature was made quick and dirty, and lacks a lot of fundamental features (like ability to delete messages). This project would be an effort to iterate the private messages to a more polished version.

Search Engine

Does what it says on the tin. Note that this is a very big task to do right, we don't want to have have to redo it as we grow and go without search again, so despite many votes this can only be done when we have a large amount of time and can afford the resources to do scalable search.

Let users pick the color scheme.

Site re-design

A new iteration of the whole site design, to improve navigation and overall polish. This needs to be done prior to the user-defined colors project and will also feature things like improved grids and UI.

For those who remember when we went from the previous very white design to this current (still very white, but much less so) design it should be a similar level of impact in terms of visual improvement to the site. This is a core task that is technically high in priority in order to avoid building features on the current UI and then remaking them as well (in short, doing this earlier means less overall work so it's a high technical priority).

Voting System overhaul

Overhaul the voting system to use the Bayesian rating algorithm and make it a less crude popularity metric to a more refined weighted percentage.

Ability to have a personal blog on a2k. Note: this is a high priority regardless of interest, as some of the forums we merged had blogs and we feel an obligation to restore them to the internet.

A mobile-friendly version of a2k that is better suited for smaller screens (e.g. iphones and android phones etc).

The current friends page was quick and dirty too, and could be much more useful (things like being able to group into topics, etc).

Create an Ad-Free Version (with subscription)

The forum will always be free as long as we can support the basic server costs through ads, but for those who do not like ads we can offer a cheap subscription to remove them across the site.

Improve the Questions Topic type and Q&A features (e.g. Unanswered Topics)

Currently the Unanswered Topics grid and the questions in general have a lot of polish that is lacking. This task would improve on the differentiation between topic types as well as the Q&A features to better manage what is still an open question.

More "Who's Online" Visibility

Right now we only show this on profile, this project is to extend that to other places (e.g. on the topic itself, show which users are online).

Of course, showing if you are online or not is a currently available preference and this would only work for those who allow it.

Improving the "My Tags" Grid

Tagging a topic is supposed to be like bookmarking it or saving it as a favorite. Right now the "My Tags" area is very simple and not very useful as such a feature so this project would aim to make it a very useful way for people to save and organize topics they like.

Nested Quote Remover

When the quote feature is used, nested quotes will be removed (leaving only two deep) so that we can avoid the necessary endless nest. Users will, of course, still have the ability to make a bunch of nested quotes but the default quote behavior will load quotes without the nested ones after 2 levels.
