@advisorstable,
Seems 18 is the legal age to join the military, and old enough to drink. Also, in most states, if not all, it's the legal age to sign contracts.

In 1962 in California one had to be 21 to drink. So, the week I turned 21 my ship took us to Pearl Harbor, where one just had to be 18.
