Last night we had another unscheduled maintenance window that closed the site, mainly because I was pushing too hard too late and trying to make fixes to the text formatting of some imported posts live. It resulted in hosing the database and waking up folk to get it all restored in the middle of the night.
So lesson learned, we are going to take the site down in advance for the next round of fixes so that we can easily correct anything that goes wrong (basically fix the plane on the ground instead of in the air).
So at some point today or tonight we are going to take the site down for maintenance and it is expected to last from 30 minutes to one hour. There will be a notice at the top of every page for 5 minutes prior to this occurring and we will try to get back to only scheduled maintenance windows.
So that means we need to get as much fixed in that window as possible, and the purpose of this maintenance window is to fix bbcode and bad characters from the import. So Philforum folk, if you have any posts with ugly formatting that you want fixed post the link here so I can add it to the list of things we'll fix in the maintenance window.
@Robert Gentel,
The Facebook group has been told.
@Robert Gentel,
To this list I'm adding the quote tag numbers. We'll get rid of all those quote ids (e.g. sometime sun;144339 wrote: )in the imported tags as well.
@Robert Gentel,
This is why I love virtualization.
Before you do
anything, just hit the "take snapshot" button. If something you do hoses the server, just hit "revert to snapshot".
@DrewDad,
That's the plan, sans visualization (it's more of a love snapshots thing than virtualization). But we can't do that live, so we need to pause, snapshot, run fixes, text then open/revert.
@Robert Gentel,
If you have the time to do so, you might want to copy this to the official A2K blog since your "Down for Maintenance" screen directs people to that blog, Twitter and Facebook for status reports.
Just a heads up that this window was rescheduled for tonight so hopefully we'll get all those things fixed tonight (and as an aside we'll be offline sometime tonight).

Yes, she said mock bitterly, I know.
We suffer from our midget sized numbers.
@dlowan,
I saw that.
You were talking about me again.
@ehBeth,
You're just a midget.
We're normal size, but there's too few of us.
Midgets are also cute.
We aren't, really.

Took longer than expected but most of the reported issues with bbcode and other text errors have been fixed (please continue to point any out that you see and we'll fix them). Additionally many of the usernames that had had " phil" appended to them have been restored to their original usernames.
