@William,
I was worried about this, when the two sites merge. If two people have the same name. One will have to be modified, or changed it seems. Im guessing the users at the site we are migrating to will have presidence. People that have uncommon/unusual names dont have to worry.

@djjd62,
Aye, thanks. More specifically, I was curious about the posts that I entered on another forum and were brought in here - an en-masse removal.

I got my possible lines of action in line earlier today, ascertained my links to setting up for getting logged on and all, and did some posting earlier this evening from the uni. Now, I don't know for sure (although looking at the times listed on the posts, it seems this was here earlier) if I just missed this, but probably did.

What I'd like to put forward, is that we--those of us who had been aboard that other vessel (if you will)--just keep our heads up, eyes open, cause we may just be slightly disorientated from the suddenness of the slip into the sea...and actually our treasure island is just beyond that bit of fog which hides all the fruit it bears (not to mention all those half-dressed young lasses waiting for us men folk to chase around on the beach) [not to be misunderstood as sexist in any pragmatic manner].

Therefore, as we merge with the motion of the waves, feeling the sea, but not the emotion of how fun playing in it can be, I would humbly like to suggest that we do keep a positive outlook (the natives on the island are to our likings for the far greater part I would tend to think), and try not to allow ourselves to be seen as bashing whatever party may be going on . . . as we slowly adapt to the culture we have sandbared on.

tracks left on the sands of a new wonderland . . . now ain't she a beauty ....

Gosh! I am tired of change. They should have given us an inkling atleast. Where's the ethics gone?

Jeeprs........ thanks for the apt analogy........ i felt kind of a hard jolt........ air turbulance, perhaps........ but yeah, lets face the inevitables in life........
right now, i am feeling like the trobriand islanders kidnapped and brought to Time Square, New York.

I also felt as though, the cosy little house, with a hearth in it, in which i thought i was in, has been exposed to commercial forces, the roof ripped apart, and made into a public house in matter of a few hours..

Sigh!

@Krumple,
Here is the ethics forum.
http://able2know.org/forum/ethics/

If you cannot find a favorite subsection, do a tag search for it and it should reveal what you are having difficulties finding.

@Jackofalltrades phil,
The interesting thing is that the house here is only as big as you want it to be. I was a little surprised at first when A2K switched to this format (there was no end of bitching from old members for a while) but after a few weeks of usage, the site automatically adjusts to your style.

As an example; if you only post in philosophy-related threads, after a while you will see almost nothing but philosophy-related stuff when you log on.

I would add that there are a lot of people here who like to discuss philosophical, moral and ethical issues, and I'm sure they would be happy to provide fresh faces for some of your conversations.

Cheers

If you tag any of your old (or new) ethics threads with "ethics" you'll find you create an ethics forum.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. Get used to this set up. Man, this is such a change, but it's definitely an interesting forum setup. It looks like more of a message board than a forum.

Eh, where's the quote button again anyone?

Is that so? It creates a whole forum. What in the world...?

@Zetherin,
Yes, because then when you look to the right of the page and see a column of "my tags" and click on "ethics", all the posts that have (ever, I think) been tagged ethics will show up..

Once all you folks' tags get transferred onto your past threads here - which Robert plans to do - then the ethics forum will be more complet.

I know I'd be interested in seeing fresco discuss philosophy with some new people here. He's pretty well versed IMO.

Hi, I am the only one experiencing massive problems since the transfer from philosophyforum?

* Always on the first page of a subject only the first one post gets displayed. The others not. It starts working on the 2nd 3rd,... pages. But all other posts of the first page are not visible. Browser newest Opera. The browser just always shows that it wants to load some ads, but it seems like he doesn't get any answer from the corresponding server. Is it possible that this is a country problem, and therefore the server doesn't deliver?

* They said on philosophyforum, that they will send an email to everyone after the transfer with the instructions how to log in.
Well I didn't get any. And my previous password was not accepted.
Then I tried the "reset password" request. I got a mail. When I go to the indicated link in the mail I shall enter a new password. No problem, I thought. But then I always just get this error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function generateSalt() on a non-object in /home/a2korg/public_html/account/index.php on line 79

This is the reason why I now created a new account. Just to be able to write this post. BTW I was "Peace" on the old forum.

* Is it just me, or is the view very chaotic. IMHO on the old forum, the overview of the posts was much much better. Here only very few threads are displayed and everything in one clump. The ordered small excel like view of the old forum was IMHO much better. There you could really see everything with just a short sight.

* A lot of the formatting special codes are not available in this forum. So on some threads you just get wasted with a lot of uninterpreted forum code...
Please filter at least this code out! Otherwise some posts are hardly readable.

* Some parts in the messages have been deleted???
E.g. on my last thread where I posted, one quote by me is completely empty???

* The voting system with good or bad is in my opinion just childish and has nothing to do with a good conversation atmosphere. I absolutely liked the "Thank you" button of the old forum. But this thumbs up and down story is something completely different and shows IMHO also the "romanic empire" style in this forum, whereas on the old forum you could inspire someone and thank him, but not throw him in the gutters. This shows IMHO much about the perspective of mind behind this forum.
This will possibly also be the reason why I will no longer participate.
Hopefully one day I will again find a good forum, with again this perfect group of people and with the right attitude of the forum leader and all the members.
Gee. One only realizes what one had, when one has lost it...

The only positive thing I see about this forum is, that the image tags are enabled...

This post may sound harsh. But that's the way I feel about it...Sorry

Wish you anyways all good luck, Peace and Light.
Maybe we will see us again sometime somewhere in another forum.

I will look into it, it actually could be a bit of cosmic irony, as I turned off ads hoping to make for a better transition, perhaps doing so caused a glitch in Opera so I'll check with that browser.

I sent out the email early this morning sometime, but if you go to the contact us link in the footer of every page and submit a ticket I can help you out.

Yeah, sorry about that. Nick (our programmer, who we love but are going to kill for this) was fixing something and broke something else. I forgive him because I get how programming works and know he's pretty damn good, but if you don't I understand and offer to beat him up or something.

Either way, he just fixed that a while ago.

I think some things are better some worse. Hierarchy of forums isn't as good here, and needs some huge improvements. The topic grid can also use a lot of improvement but is actually less cluttered than the VB grids and has about the same information.

We are working on this, please give us links to each example you find so we can test our fixes.

Send them to us, we'll fix them. It's due to non-standard characters that we'll convert to better ones. Sometimes if a post has one of Microsoft's "smart" quotes it will do that and we are going to be running find/replace fixes. The more examples you can give us the better, as we have over 4 million posts in the database and would like to nail the find/replace in as few passes as possible.

Whether you like the voting or not is one thing but I doubt you've gained much useful insight into "the perspective of mind behind this forum" based on it.

Don't be sorry for giving an opinion, but I think you'd feel differently with a less impulsive reaction (perhaps, for example, you'd find more than one positive).

Well, I cant say I liked this transition. It was like dying and suddently finding myself in an afterlife where im supposed to eat stones and build my house with dead animals. Except everyone else also died and ended up in the same afterlife.

But, well, I suppose it cant be helped, so I will just have to adapt to it. The function that I havent re-found and that I miss the most is the ability to track threads that you have posted on, but have new posts you havent read. How do you do that there?

Also, thanks for the effort, since I have noticed reading around that this transition is sort of saving philforum from a hacky doom =)
