Michael Jackson's Ranch Searched in Criminal Probe
Nov 18, 3:16 PM (ET)
By Dan Whitcomb

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Reuters) - Police swarmed over pop superstar Michael Jackson's opulent Neverland Ranch near Santa Barbara in central California on Tuesday as part of an unspecified criminal investigation, officials said.

Police gave no details about the probe but cable channel Court TV, whose reporter was on the scene, quoted sources saying it stemmed from a new allegation of sexual abuse brought by a 12-year-old boy against the self-styled King of Pop.

Jackson, 45, has been dogged over the past 10 years by rumors and allegations stemming from his professed affection for young children. A former child star himself, Jackson has said he thinks of himself as "Peter Pan."

Nine years ago a 14-year-old boy reached an out-of-court agreement to settle a lawsuit accusing the singer of molesting him in 1992. No criminal charges were ever brought in that case and Jackson publicly denied any wrongdoing.

Sheriffs deputies and officials from the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office descended early on Tuesday morning on the Neverland ranch where Jackson has built theme-park rides, a zoo and a miniature train ride which he occasionally throws open to local children.

They said in a statement they went to "serve a search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation."

Court TV said its reporter saw a convoy of vehicles entering the compound, including a forensic evidence gathering van. The search was still going on three hours later.

A spokesman for Jackson was not immediately available for comment and Jackson's whereabouts were not clear, but syndicated TV show Access Hollywood said Jackson was in Las Vegas shooting a music video with his own three children.

Tuesday's search warrant follows a tumultuous year for Jackson, whose talents as an entertainer have been eclipsed by his often bizarre behavior both on and off screen.

In February, he revealed in a British television documentary that he sometimes shared his Neverland bedroom with young boys. One boy, a 12-year-old cancer survivor called Gavin, spoke openly about his affection for Jackson and of enjoying sleepovers with the pop star at Neverland.

"Why can't you share your bed? The most loving thing you can do is share your bed with someone," Jackson said in the documentary. He strongly denied any sexual intent.

The frank revelations sparked calls for an investigation by California child welfare authorities at the Neverland ranch.

The search warrant was executed on the same day that a new greatest hits collection was released, featuring Jackson's latest single, "One More Chance."

CBS television has scheduled a special next week tracing his career from his Motown days as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 through his emergence as one of the recording industry's biggest stars.

In November last year, the former child-star stunned fans in Berlin by dangling his barefoot baby from a hotel window.

In June, Jackson settled a $12 million breach of contract lawsuit by his former top adviser, avoiding a trial that threatened to spill details of his financial empire and personal life into open court.

No charges have currently been filed against Jackson and authorities firmly declined to give any information about the current probe.

Lou Palumbo, a former police detective who now heads Elite Agency Ltd., a security firm that works with celebrities and provides protection to events like the Golden Globes, warned that someone could be targeting Jackson in the hope of making money.

"This could just be another allegation from someone that wants money from him," Palumbo told Reuters.

Investigators armed with a search warrant swarmed Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch on Tuesday for undisclosed reasons but we can go right ahead and imagine, because we cannot really help it, that it more than likely has something to do with creepy icky unspeakable sad things involving pre-teens and llamas and small pet monkeys and oxygen tanks and rubber hoses and spankings and naked pillow fights with everyone wearing cute animal masks and old Jackson 5 hits blaring though the house's 512-speaker stereo system and hot tubs and lime Jell-O.

Authorities carried out the warrant at the 45-year-old singer's sprawling home in the Santa Ynez Valley outside of Santa Barbara. Jackson's spokesman, Stuart Backerman, did not answer his cell phone, presumably because he was getting bombed on whiskey sours and gin martinis at the Velvet Lounge off Pico in L.A. at noon on a Tuesday wondering just how the hell a nice bookish dorky kid from Brooklyn who never gets oral sex ended up with a gig like this and what the hell happened to his dreams of becoming a sprint car driver or maybe a owner of a chain of successful Shoe Pavilions.

Jacko Case Older Than You Think | 'Fog' a Fave?
Jacko Lawyer: Working On Case For Months

Forget all these stories that Mark Geragos was hired to represent Michael Jackson just yesterday. Or the day before. Were we all born yesterday? Geragos has been on the case since last March.

That's right. Jackson has known for most of the year, even if he didn't want to acknowledge it, that trouble was brewing at Neverland. The child who is now the subject of this molestation allegation began to raise questions about their relationship late last winter. Jackson -- who is not completely out of touch with reality -- responded by bringing in an expert defender.

Jackson's camp, I am told, is more than ready to do battle with his accuser and his family. I am told that the mother of the child involved will be held up to severe scrutiny. In fact, Jackson's side will likely argue that when he tried to break off his involvement with helping the boy and his family financially, the mother became, and I am quoting a Jackson insider, "a scorned woman."

"She's very screwed up," said one source. "There's videotape of her acting weird, too. And Michael was very kind to her, even getting an apartment for her boyfriend."

But the argument will be that when this woman, who is financially so dependent that she claimed to have lived in a barn, was told by Jackson's people that the party was over, she ran to a lawyer to see what she could get out of it.

Remember, everyone in this country is guaranteed a defense, even if you don't agree with it.

But as I wrote in this space yesterday, a lot of the evidence in the Jackson case will come down to videotape. There is lots of it, too, some of which may show the boy and his family singing the praises of Jackson, defending and explaining his odd lifestyle. If so, they will be hard-pressed to explain their own behavior now. For example: In one interview last winter, the mother of the boy told a reporter: "Michael has pet names for all of my children, and [one of them] even calls him Daddy. He is the father they never had." She said all her children were "hoping to spend a lot more time with him in the future."

The sudden change in Jackson's schedule, by the way, throws a monkey wrench into his promotional plans for his new greatest hits album. Michael and his entourage were three days away from leaving for Paris and Berlin, where enthusiastic fans would have greeted him. Here in the U.S., the album has so far not made any of the early top 10 of the week lists at major retailers like Tower, Virgin or HMV.

And here's one big P.S. for all you Jackson watchers: Steer clear of on-camera commentators who are hustling their own gig on Jacko's back. I am talking about folks like Shmuley Boteach, Uri Geller and Brian Oxman, all of whom are quick to quip when the red light goes on, but know nothing about the case, Jackson or his alleged victim.

(11-20) 12:29 PST SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) --

A handcuffed Michael Jackson walked into the Santa Barbara jail on Thursday to face child molestation charges that could send the pop superstar to prison for years if he is convicted.

A private jet landed at the Santa Barbara airport shortly before noon and rolled its nose into the partly opened doors of a hangar. A caravan of cars left the hangar and arrived at a county building shortly afterward.

Jackson, his hands cuffed behind his back, was escorted into the Santa Barbara County main jail shortly after noon.

One cannot even imagine the goings-on at Neverland between Michael Jackson and his invited sleeping partners who happened to be well below the age of consent.

Nor can one imagine the approval of such sleep-overs by irresponsible parents. To me, these parents should share in the blame for the "lewd and lascivious" behavior with which Jackson is charged.

You know what the difference between Michael Jackson and a plastic shopping bag is?

One is white, made of plastic, and is dangerous to children. The other is a plastic shopping bag.

Doesn't the timing of Jackson's arrest seem odd? Bush is in London and one of the biggest anti-Bush rallies about to take place and then suddenly heeeere's Jako, stealing the headlines and saving Bush once again from the scrutiny of the media.
